Cellphone transmissions may be responsible for a mysterious, worldwide die off in bees that has mystified scientists.
Dr. Daniel Favre, a former biologist with the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Lausanne, Switzerland, carefully placed a mobile phone underneath a beehive and then monitored the reaction of the workers. According to a story in The Daily Mail, the bees were able to tell when the handsets were making and receiving calls. They responded by making the high pitched squeaks that usually signal the start of swarming.
"This study shows that the presence of an active mobile phone disturbs bees -- and has a dramatic effect," Favre told the Daily Mail.
Favre believes this to be evidence of something other scientists have suggested: Signals from mobile phones are contributing to the decline of honeybees. Favre thinks more research could help confirm the link between cell signals and "colony collapse disorder" -- the sudden disappearance of entire colonies over winter -- which has halved the bee population, according to some estimates.

Looking at the actual study - they put cell phones inside the bee hives. In the real world, how many bee hives have their own cell phones? Do beekeepers use wireless telemetry monitoring or is there widespread use of cameras wirelessly transmitting close-up images of bee hives? It's like feeding someone Big Macs & only Big Macs until they get sick, & them blaming just the Big Macs...

They will come up with an app to counter that.

I think putting the cell under the hive created an amplified situation that had a more immediate effect. But possibly all the transmissions going through the air all the time between phones and cell towers could have a much more gradual effect... e.g. colony collapse disorder. A lot of poison will kill you quickly.... a little poison every day could kill you slowly.

Check this article out. Cell phones and cell towers could have some impact on honeybees but this article list other things that have a much bigger impact in the bees.

I think the bees should switch to land lines and keep it that way.
In all actuality, the bee situation is crucial to our own personal food chains. The great pollinators of our food crops are in serious decline. I do not find it unreasonable that technology could have a detrimental effect upon the finely-tuned homing systems innate with bees. Die-offs have increased dramatically over the past decade.

maybe their Google earth map was off on their cell phones....it would be funny if the very food we put in our mouths everyday didn't depend on these little guys!
I have read about this for years but one observation i have made and it's probably nuts, but the next time your at a convenience store and filling up next to a garbage can, look at how many bees are all over the soda cans....sugar yes, but caffiene in the cokes, red bulls, mountain dews....our kids can't handle the caffiene let alone an insect. Something so simple as a bee's brain can't handle this drug's effects. How would a drug induced bee get back to the hive and then give directions to the sugar source, and get back...crazy I know, but it is amazing what these guys do to find sources of food and direct a hive to it and back again.
