I might buy a cheap bolt action rifle soon to transfer my scope to from my 30-30 so I can put a ghost ring sight on the 30-30. Question is, should I get the seemingly-popular .270 or should I get the rugged, powerful .308? or maybe a 7mm magnum?

I went from .270 to a 7mag. I LOVE the mag. BUT the .270 was very efficient also.

308 is available in shorter, lighter rifles(short action)
270 is long action
you can't go wrong with either. got no use for 7mag.

I've had .270's and .308's both, and had good success with each, but prefer the .308 personally.

A 7 mag is over-kill if you ask me.....they HURT too! \:D

The 308 has less recoil with a 150g bullet than the 270 with a 130 bullet. The 270 will shoot flatter than the 308.Ammo availibility is good for both rounds.........I guess it's mainly a matter of personal preference.

As far the 7mm goes,IMO it's a great round but it's better suited for hunting out west where longer shots might be needed.

It isn't my money you are spending but if it were me I would take it down a notch in recoil and go with a .243.

Nothing goes far heart-shot with any of those calibers.

I would (and did) get a 270 for my first deer rifle, because it's more versatile. (I mean it's just as effective as the 308 for short (250 and closer) ranges but flatter shooting for longer ranges. If I wanted more than one deer rifle, the 308 would be an excellent gun to set up for specific situations.

For example, I have a light, short barrelled 260 set up with a lowpower scope for treestand and woods stalking, and a 270 set up with a higher-powered scope for sitting over power lines and larger food plots and fields.

Both .270/.308 are great for whitetail. I've killed deer with both, the deer or I couldn't tell the difference. I have noticed the deer fall quicker with the .308.

A well placed .270 will sufficiently kill any North American Big Game animal short of a Grizzly Bear and a Moose and has less recoil than a .308.
.308 is an awesome round, but will require more time, possibly quite a bit more time, at the range. If you are inexperienced with larger calibers and do not plan to shoot regularly (multiple times a month), then I suggest going with the .270 based off of recoil and handling alone since you'll be more accurate with it.

i beg to differ on the recoil. i have a featherweight model 70 in 270 that will rattle your teeth while BOWd's ruger 308 is a pleasure to shoot.

Well, ok... sure, a Featherweight gun is going to have recoil. A 1911 in .45 can have less recoil than a 9mm in polymer frame. I did shoot one of those Remington R25 in .308 from prone position and it didn't have much recoil at all, but that is a pretty heavy gun, too.

there is only about a 1/2 lb difference in the weight. i believe it is more to do with stock design and material. the 270 is walnut, the 308 is synthetic.

Personally dont care for either, but if I had to choose it would be .308, I dont like any less than .30 caliber but thats just me, there is no right or wrong on this one. But if im buying, its 30-06 all the way.

I have had multiple 270s and 308s. The 270 definitely has more recoil, synthetic or wood. There's a reason more youth rifles are made in 308 than in 270. I must say I'm a huge fan of both.

I don't have any experience with a .270, but my buddy loves his. I picked up a .308 due to wanting to have an AR-10 eventually. I bought a Savage Model 10 LE. It's the heavy bull barrel, synthetic stock, nice butt pad. With a Nikon Pro-Staff and Hornady 168 Gr A-Max, it'll put 4 shots in 3/4" at 100yds from an unsteady rest of just a front bipod.

why is it over rated? The term Magnum is just a marketing gimic word. A 162 grain bullet with a very high BC going 3100 fps, that is what it is. How can numbers be rated at all? IT is what it is. 7mm mags are great rounds. I like many rounds because of thier performance. My Browning A Bolt Medallion in 30-06 kicks harder than any of my 7mm mags.

This is the first year I'm hunting with the 7mm Mag. I shot it a little last year and never got used to it, probably due to lack of practice. I've shot it a few times since then, and I think I've gotten better with it. It seems to shoot fine. My rifle doesn't kick that much, not much more than my muzzleloader. Perhaps because it's a heavier rifle.

However, I'm considering getting a .308 in the future. Mainly for the smaller size, lighter weight, and the less expensive bullets.

Both will do the job. That being said...

308 for versatility, data, and load options.

i would take the 308 over a 270 as the thread asks, most of the garbage I was talking is because I am partial to my 7mm. I reload all of my guns and to be honest I have a 30-06 as well as my wife, and since I dont hunt on my family farm anymore, I dont really have long shots (now under 200 usually) so I dont break out the big boy except for some practice or if I go to wyomning.

Owned them both in a model 700's, We walk alot when we hunt and run deer drives pretty consistantly. The 7mm was uncomfortably heavy carrying and shooting off hand. The .270 was way easier, shorter barrel and much lighter. Eventually I sold them both and carry a .243 everywhere, its light and accurate but I do miss the 270 from time to time. Was acutally looking at a model 770 in .270 until I saw some bad reviews and some comments.

I have shot 4 elk, 6 mule deer, 3 whitetails, 2 moose, 9 black bears, 50+ coyotes, 2 mountain goats, 1 big horn sheep and countless gophers with my 308. There is nothing a 308 can't do if you place the shot correctly. I love my 308 and will never change to another cal anytime in my life.

I hunt with a 30-.06 and I don't have to track them. They drop where I hit them or only go less than 10 yards.

I keep hearing people talk about over kill..... you can only kill some thing once... it is either dead or is not...... yes there are guns will more power than needed....but depends on the circumstances....... you can kill them with a .22 or a .458 and anything in between....end result they are dead

.270 wasa the rifle that I stepped up to from the 30-30 when I was younger. It has been a great gun and I have never had to track an animal no further than 20 yards from where it was hit. I hunt with Hornady ammunition with the ballistic tips. The .308 is also a very good gun as well, I have a browning lever action .308 and love it.Both are great guns but i'd say if I had to choose it would be the .270.

killed many deer with both calibers. it really depends on what you like. .308 is a well researched round and if your interested in stockpiling ammo then it's a good choice. .270 is also a great round. It has became more researched round lately. You could go wrong with neither round in my opinion. My only suggestion is if you are hunting places with long shots in mind get a flat shooting gun you have minimal drop with.

had a 270 and killed some nice dear with it, sold it last year for a 308 which i plan to kill some deer with.

I personally like the less recoil on the 308 but both are fine rounds to play with.

I have a Savage 110 7mmMag, Rem. 700 ADL .270, and a Savage Axis .308.

Make sure they are sighted in well, and just sort of grab one and go.

270 and 7mm Mag are flatter shooting just better ballistics, if you ever want to hunt out west 270 and 7mm Mag are better options. I've been military/Law enforcement for 13 years and shot and still shoot alot 308 and wont use one for hunting, JUST MY OPINION.
