My wifes toyota echo started smoking this morning. It was blowing hot air from the air conditioner, thermostat was flashing along with battery sign. I put water in the radiator and tried to drive it to service station, but it died half way there with the same symptoms. This time it did not smoke though. I am hoping the belt came off so the alternator wasn't charging the battery and the battery just ran out. I am guessing it is either that, the thermostat is stuck, or something else. Anyone know what it could be? I'm waiting on it to be towed right now...please God don't let this bankrupt me.

Where was the smoke coming from? It does sound like a belt. Can you not see if it's missing?
A discharged battery can cause all kinds of problems, but was it low on coolant too? You say you put water in the radio (sure you meant radiator), which would be unrelated to a belt failure.

It looked like it was coming from radiator. The engine got very hot from what my wife said. She went inside doctor for 30 minutes, came back out and it was still very hot.

Still leaning towards a belt problem. From what I've seen, the water pump is driven by the flat side of the belt (not the V side).
A belt would also explain the alternator not charging and A/C not cooling.

That's what I was thinking...

I hope so. I'm just hoping the engine didn't overheat and I have to get a new engine for it.

They'll usually shut down before serious engine damage. You should be OK.

Unless you put cold water into a hot engine without it running .
