I think Wildcat may be right here. I always understood that if you had one gallon of gas no matter what the price! .48 cents was included in that 1 Gallon of gas in taxes.
No matter what happens to the price of that gallon/ .48 cents is going to come out as a tax on that gallon. No matter if it 3.00 or 10.00 a gallon. That one gallon is going to have .48 cents in it for tax.
Is this right? If so the state makes no more revenue no matter what the price per gallon is.
Now if it were a percentage of that gas price/ Well that would be another story.

Your correct on standard fuel tax but It's is a precentage 6% in Tennessee per one $ sales tax. The chart I posted the link to shows the regular state fuel tax and the percentage of sales tax you will pay. It don't show federal fuel tax tho. I can't understand whats so hard to grip....when gas was $1 a gallon the state collected 6 cents...with gas at $4 a gallon the state collects 24 cents. Now tell me thats not a windfall of extra tax $$.
And yes Wildkitty ( love that name, kinda grows on ya)..you like to follow any post I make in any forum for the sake of arguement. I could make a post the sky is blue and you would argue the point saying the only reason I said so is my union boss told me so. Sorry but I have not had a union boss in over 10 years now.

It's the same everytime....raise the price quite a bit, lower the price a few cents and everyone will be saying look cheap gas in a few months but it never gets back to the original price. Has not anyone else noticed this pattern.
The states are the big winners. With sales tax included in the pump price each time the price goes up thats more tax $$ in their pockets. It's not based on a set amount per gallon but pump price. Good Lord!!! We get everything from some people but the real reasons. Do you have any links at all to prove that?? The Federal AND state taxes are based on PER GALLION, NOT pump price.
Here ya go trying to prove me wrong from your first post...read it again slower..The federal and state motor fuel tax has stayed the same PER gallon...the amount of sales tax collected is based on the pump price Per $. Again do the math gas at $1 a gallon the state collects 6 cents per gallon...at $4 a gallon the state collects 24 cents PER Gallon. No place in my post was anything said about state or federal motor fuel tax.

Oh but I did prove you wrong and you proved YOURRSELF wrong with this post you just made.
Here's this from YOUR post.
It's not based on a set amount per gallon but pump price.
Now you said this,
Again do the math gas at $1 a gallon the state collects 6 cents per gallon...at $4 a gallon the state collects 24 cents PER Gallon.
You changed you entire story right here. You went from NOT getting sales tax PER GAL to getting sales tax PER GAL.
You can't ever read what you write.
Thank you for PROVING ME RIGHT!!!!!

Give it a rest.
The bottom line is that the GOVERNMENT is getting rich off of gasoline sales.
