Some may not be old enough to remember this or even bought gas in Indiana when the sales tax was first put in place. Go to you local station and ask for $10 worth, the attendent stopped the pump short of the $10 price to make up the sales tax differance. Example if you bought that $10 worth and the sales tax was 5 cents on the $ the pump would read $9.50 not $10. It didn't take them long to set the pumps to collect the sales tax so when you ask for $10 worth thats what they read but automaticly included the sales tax in the end. It stands to reason as the price of gas goes up more state sales tax is collected.

That's NOT what you said.

Here's what you said in YOUR OWN WORDS.

With sales tax included in the pump price each time the price goes up thats more tax $$ in their pockets. It's not based on a set amount per gallon but pump price.

You still don't get it do you???? I guess this is way over your head and you better talk to your union bosses so you will know what to say.

The sales tax % IS THE PRICE PER GAL.

If it was done your way please explain how a pump can come up with a final sales tax???

Have you ever seen a price change AFTER you get though pumping???? It would HAVE to do that once you get though to come up with the sales tax, right?? Since YOU say it's based on the pump price.

The pump price is set PER GAL and that incules the SALES TAX.

You just don't get it and the name calling doesn't bother me at all, it just shows that's all you have.

Go back and re-read what you just posted.

$10 worth thats what they read but automaticly included the sales tax in the end.

Have you ever seen one pump do that or are you just guessing??

All the gas pumps are Metered Pumps they HAVE to go by PER GAL. They CAN measure 1 single penny of gas BASED on price and tax per gal. They do NOT add more prices at the end.

SO I give you a chart that shows sales tax on gas is 6%. I don't think I am the one that don't get it WK. Gas let's say cost $99.9 a gallon there is a 6% sales tax set in place per $ spent in that pump price AT THE PUMP. Now gas goes to $1.99.9....that same 6% now brings in 12 cents in sales tax PER GALLON. You do the math how much sales tax is collected PER GALLON when the price hits $4.15.9, then tell me that don't amount to a nice hunk of change in the states pockets.

And as far as the $10 worth of gas it was the entire state that collected sale tax on gas this way not just one station. Rather than run it over and risk loseing money they stopped it short. If you filled up a tank then it was just like now in any store added on the final end of the deal. They had these neat little charts laying beside the cash register to tell you how much additional tax to collect. But remember very few people filled their gas tanks back in those days and gas was much cheaper.

Regardless of whether sales tax on gasoline is a set price per gallon, or a percentage, the important point to take out of this discussion is:

The GOVERNMENT is soaking us far more than the oil companies.

I just talked to a friend that owns several stations in the Paducah area and he told me the sales tax was set in the price PER GAL.

He also told me that if ANY PUMP in the State of Kentucky automaticly included the sales tax in the end (YOUR WORDS)the owner would go to jail.

The price PER GALLION you see at the pump INCULES ALL FEDERAL AND STATE GAS TAXES AND STATE SALES TAXES.

They DO NOT add anything AT THE END like you've been saying.

If you cannot understand that I can't help it.

Thanks Wildcat-I know that I have never paid a penny more than what the pump reads{and that tax was included in the advertised price}. That's why I asked if gas is double taxed? ;\)

Just don't get it do ya.....6% of $4 is more than 6% of $2, double in fact. The sales tax is added to what the gas station operator pays wholesale and reflects that additonal tax on the pump today. Thats all I am saying...the state is reaping a windfall in extra tax $ in the way of sales tax collected.

Just a thought...were any of you around when the sales tax was first came up with ? I was FWIW if I remember right Kentucky started out with 3 cents on the $.. And yes not long after it came out I almost got put in jail for argueing over the guy stopping the pump at a station in Indiana short of the $5 worth of gas I was buying. It was not long after they set the pump prices to reflect the % of sales tax collected per $.

In Va at least there is just a 17.5 cents tax[state] per gallon-no additional sales tax.So in escense here in Va there is only the addition of increased cost of the fuel itself.

No that's not what you were saying. You were saying it was "ADDED ON AT THE END" (those were YOUR words) which in itself is ILLEGAL in all states!!! And THAT'S what I've been trying to show you.

I see it went over your head again.

6% is the SAME PECENTAGE if it's $100 or $100 million it's STILL 6%. Someone paying a 6% SALES TAX at Wal-Mart on $100 would be paying the SAME PERCENTAGE as someone that spends $100 MILLION at the same store.

The TOTAL tax on $100 million is MORE than the TOTAL TAX of $100 but the TAX PERCENTAGE IS THE SAME.

The sales tax is INCULED in the price at the pump which is PER GAL.
