But for now -- and perhaps the foreseeable future -- the island's massive whitetail deer and wild turkey population has fallen victim to the flood waters of the Mississippi River.
"The deer and turkey are all just gone from the island," said Andy Tweed, a conservation officer for the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency who patrols the river regularly. "So many of them have drowned, and the rest of them have fled to wherever they could find a little patch of higher ground.
"I honestly believe 60 percent of the deer herd will be lost."
Though deer are capable swimmers, many have been no match for the swift currents of the Mississippi. During the past week, Tweed has been forced to kill at least a dozen deer that he found tangled in barbed-wire fences or the tops of trees that are now surrounded by 40 feet of water.
Even some that managed to escape to other areas haven't survived.
"A lot of the deer from the island jumped right out onto (Interstate) 55 and just got instantly splattered by cars," said Ty Inmon, a TWRA conservation officer who rode the river with Tweed on Tuesday.
Wild turkeys may have been hit even harder by the flood because it occurred during the height of their mating season -- and because they aren't nearly as capable when it comes to swimming.

Dang that sucks. You would think the turkeys would fly off though and not drown. Too bad the eggs can't fly too.

I must disagree.
This flood is a result of man's hand trying to keep the river contained by all those levees.
Let the river run naturally and remove all those nuts who want to live right on the banks of the Mighty Mississippi.

Flip, if the river had been allowed to "run naturally," as you suggest, there would have been many lost lives.
This flood is in no way a result of "man's trying to keep the river contained by all those levees." The flood was caused by rain. Didn't see where "man" had anything whatsoever to do with it. Are you suggesting "man" caused the rain?
Those levees saved countless lives and property, as they have for years. Of all the so-called government projects, the Mississippi River levee system is among the few that has paid off when you consider cost to build verses loss of property and human life.
Once again, you are wrong.

Very sad, My heart holds a special memory for Presidents Island.
I would close it for 10 years, do a study and go from there. It can be the special place that it once was in due time. Freeze the drawings where they are at now and resume, when its opened back up for drawed hunts

I drove down there this afternoon. Saw deer hanging out and eating in places they shouldnt be, little islands of concrete, or patches of high grass right next to the road. I'm sure they're pretty stressed, but I'm sure they'll be fine. The thinning of the herd might actually benefit it in the long run.

I took a drive down to the Island this afternoon two. Saw the same thing you saw as well BigAl. I didnt see any other deer other than those on those mounds of concrete/dirt with a couple of turkeys as well. I know there has to be some negative impact on the population. Struck me as pretty sad driving off the Island. Ive seen many of beautiful bucks in that same area.

I'm not disagreeing with anyone here, but I would say that man has a tendency to change the landscape and other natural things in order to live where he desires, NOT where it is feasible.
If there was a system or formula that people used to decide where it is feasible to build and occupy according to past records of flooding, even 100 year floods, then maybe there would be no one needing to be evacuated when these things do occur.
if the only things near these huge rivers were recreational areas (boat docks) and maybe things like barge depots or whatever they are called, but NO HOMES were allowed close enough to be flooded out, then maybe all this federal aid and insurance money wouldn't be necessary. Maybe farmland may still get flooded but no homes.
But, with man's ego as it is, he wants to live where he wants and even when he gets flooded out , many will go right back and rebuild right in the same spot.....Some have been flooded out more than a few times over the past 10-20 years and still they go back.....
Let the rivers flow like nature intended and build well away from the flood plain and no one is being evacuated and no homes are lost.

I would think the turkeys would be fine. Shoot, the ones I bump seem to fly forever when they bust out!! What about the businesses on the Island? Are they a total loss or did they have any type of levee around them? How many people are employed in the industrial park? Would be double bad if your house and workplace both got flooded.

As far as the "Mother Nature Argument" goes, PI is a man made island. So, if you have a philosophical problem intervening with the river's natural course, by all means, protest by not applying for the hunt there.

I think its ok for people to live and build in these flood areas, as long as they're responsible for their losses. The taxes I pay shouldn't go to bail them out, give them loans, or rebuild their structures. Same for the crops planted in these areas.

I feel the same way about people who live right on the coast...especially the barrier islands.
