Ok I am trying to lose a little weight and get into a little better shape.
My wife has dropped like 118 dress sizes over the last couple of years.
Basically she eats ALOT of beans, yogurt, special K bars that kind of stuff.

I am eating oranges, special K bars, yogurt, tuna fish and chicken and drinking nothing but water (Propel) every day.

I am seeing that all this "good" stuff has carbs.
Not trying a "diet" but more of a lifestyle change that includes "better" food, less of it and more exercise.

I have seen though that the "low carb" diets and stuff say you need to stay at or below about 30g of carbs.
Eating this "healthy" stuff and from what I can tell I am up around somewhere between 40 and 60 per day.

Am I any better off from a weight loss standpoint or do I need to just go back to eating baked potatoes loaded with butter, steaks and garlic bread? \:D

Yeah I feel your pain brother.

Wife is on a "nothing artifical" & low carb diet kick.
She is dropping lbs and feeling MUCH better after the first week of he11 so it is working.

I have tagged along and noticed after a week of eating healthy that the stuff made in Frankenstein's lab really affects you.

For example. Coffee. Never drank coffee until last fall. Now I am hooked on it but want mocha's. (yeah I know, training wheels).
If I put hershey syrup (contains high fructose corn syrup) in it, I get the shakes an hour or two later. If I put one spoon full of regular sugar and one spoonfull of baking cocoa, almost the same taste but no shakes. I can even have 2 cups with no problems.

TO get all science class on you, there are basically 2 types of carbs, simple and complex. Simple carbs will digest quickly and spike your blood sugar. Complex carbs will digest more slowly and not spike you as bad.
From what I have read, spiking your blood sugar = bad.
Most engineered foods are DESIGNED to give you a quick sugar shot which gives you a mild euphoria and feeling of satisfaction. Naturally your blood sugar spikes and then crashes making you hungry and crave more.

Start reading labels and you will freak out at the amount of "what the h*** is that?" stuff in your food.

Look up "low glycemic foods" and you will be amazed at how stuff like baked potatoes and white rice is almost like eating desert.

Looks like one of the main ingredients in Special K bars is corn syrup...not the best for fat loss. Look carefully at your yogurt label too. Plain yogurt is great, but most of the flavored ones are loaded with sugar. All this glycemic index stuff was explained in the first Zone book in 1995. Here's a quick description of their food pyramid: http://www.zonediet.com/Tools/Quick-Start-Guide

Got lots of friends who have lost lots of weight on sugarbusters. Here's their basic info:

Here I am setting here reading this while I'm eating 4 thick strips of bacon, 2 eggs over easy, hashbrowns, toast and jelly and a large glass of ice cold milk.

I'm now seeing TnDeer making it's start to becoming a straight vegan web site. Just think, in a couple years at the TnDeer/LBL campout we are setting around drinking b-12 water while there is tofu-soy steaks on the grill.

NEVER!!

Don't go fooling yourself. There will always be a place in my heart (and arteries) for Smoked pork shoulders and bacon!

I just don't want a bunch of nitrates, nitrites, glycoline, and other junk in it. Just pure pork with a pile of spices and salt.

Besides. beer is natural if done right. Barley, Water,Yeast, Hops.

I eat what I want, how I want, when I want....the key is portion sizes and exercise...plain and simple. Calories are calories, dont care where you get them, if you take in more than you burn, you gain weight. I will agree the right foods for your body are important, I like veggies, fruits, nuts, lean meats and every now and then junk food, ie mcd's, bk, pizza...my wife has been on an exercise kick for over a year, she started walking, then jogging and then 5K to 10 K and now is running half marathons. She has gone from a large woman to between thin and medium, she no weighs less than when we got married and loves her new her. I do not like diets, hate them as a matter of fact, they are bad for you. Get portion size under control and work out a little every day, it will pay huge dividends. My favorite exercise? Walking 9 or 18 holes of golf on a summer eve in 90 degree heat. You will walk about 6 miles, get to beat on something the whole way and burn calories while your at it!! It does not have to hurt to burn, just has to move!

Don't worry about the carbs you get from eating fruit. If it's been refined, then you should worry. Basically anything that was on earth 1000 years ago would be healthy. Except a potatoe loaded with butter.;) If you want to stay away from carbs, leave bread and white rice alone, along with any thing with high fructose corn syrup.
Thats in a nut shell, theres more to it.

No, all carbs are not created equal. A short read below will explain this somewhat.
