here are a few things to help you along the way to losing weight.
1) All carbohydrates are made of Glucose molecules linked together. the simple vs. complex comes from how they are linked. for example, simple carbs may be a few glucose molecules in length with no cross liking making them easily digested 9thus the spike in blood sugar). Complex carbs may be longer chains with cross links or multiple chains cross-linked together. Cellulose is a complex carb that we cannot digest. those carbs that take longer to digest do not cause a spike in blood sugar.
2) Building on #1; when your blood sugar spikes, your body removes the sugar from your bloodstream and stores it as glycogen. It can be metabolized later if needed, but if you dont need it later it can be converted to fat and stored. In essence, a diet high in simple sugars will cause an increase in stored fat in your body.
3) Dont go long periods wihtout eating. Your body will go into "Starvation" mode after about 8 hours. When you do eat again, it will convert more of the carbs to fat for the next time your body might need it. So, in essence skipping meals can cause you to gain weight. Eat several small meals throughout the day rather than a few large meals many hours apart.
4) A calorie is a measure of energy. 1 gram of fat has 9 calories while 1 gram of carbohydrates stores only 4 calories. What it means is you must expend 2.25 times as much energy to burn 1 gram of fat than you do to burn 1 gram of carbohydrate. If you exercise and burn more calories than you take in, you will lose weight.
5) You still need fat in your diet, about 1 tablespoon of unsaturated fat per day.
6) Overall....Eat more smaller meals high in complex carbs and low in fat (Especially saturated fat), Dont eat and go to bed, burn more calories than you take in.Lay off the big mac value meals..Each meal has 1286 calories, That is about half what you would need in a day to maintain your current weight.
7) Oh yeah, you still need protein too, and lean red meat is the best source out there.

I went to a diet doctor in Knoxville and got some diet pills. I still eat whatever I want but I try to cut back on the size of the portions I eat. I have also cut out about 90% of coke/pepsi and trying to just drink Sprite Zero when I do drink some kind of pop. started at 245 2 months ogo and I went today for my yearly fisical for work and Im down to 226. I also try to walk on my lunch break insted of going out to eat with everyone else. I have not walked alot in the past few weeks. If I would try harder and watch what I eat I could drop fast but the whole reading the back of boxes is just not for me

I will bet that it has one of those hidden sugars like "Rice bran juice" Nope again. "Ingredients: Rolled Whole Oat Flakes, Whole Wheat, Raisins (may be coated with expeller pressed canola or sunflower oil), Whole Barley, Skim Milk Powder, Roasted Hazelnuts, Malt Extract, Sliced almonds."
Malt extract is a sugar. Milk powder has several different kinds of sugars in it.(milk)
The only cereal I can find in a regular grocery store that doesn't have added sugars is Shredded wheat or Shredded wheat and bran. Of course if you have it with milk you are consuming the milk sugars but they tend to be low enough in quantity and buffered by the protein that they don't usually cause a spike.

You can look at me and tell I'm no expert when it comes to dieting. However, a friend who is a weight watchers instructor said alot of the breakfast/snack bars aint all that good for you. She recommended Nature Valley "OatsNHoney" bars. Its loaded with Carbs as well, so I dont really know why she says this is the best one to eat.

I agree with about everything in this post. You hit the nail on the head with simple carbohydrates causing a spike in blood sugar that signals your body to store glycogen and then later as fat.
The only thing I don't 100% agree on is meals high in complex carbs. I'd say keep the portions of carbs lower and and increase the veggies instead. My body is better with fewer carbs than more. If were more active, more carbs could work for me.
Another thing, you don't need meat at every meal. Hard to beat a bowl of brown beans...
And if anyone wants a snack while reading the forum. Buy some Ranch Dressing mix and mix it with Greek Yogurt. It's like ranch dip with protein in it. Tastes wonderful. Use it with some veggies or on a salad.
To anyone who is thinking of diet pills and so on, please be careful. Working with medications for a living has given me a lot of experience in what the risks and benefits are.

Picture this: You have 60,000 miles of blood vessels (gas lines). You have 100 trillion cells (engines). 90% of what you eat is digested and absorbed through the small intestine and goes into your blood stream where it's distributed to your cells (engines). At night while you are sleeping you are running on 2 clylinders. When you wake up you just started 100 trillion engines and are now running on 8 cylinders. The food you eat is used as fuel. First rule: Eat breakfast within one hour of waking up. Second Rule: If meals are greater than 4 hours apart you need to have a planned snack between those meals. It's just how the body works.
Treat your diet like a job. Eat healthy and make good choices moast of the time and cheat sometimes. I like the 90/10 rule. 90% of my week I eat really good but 10% of the week is not so good. But I always eat on schedule regardless. 6, 9, 12, 3, 6 and maybe 8 depending on how active I was and how many calories the 6:00pm meal was. TONIGHT IS THAT 10% NIGHT!!!

I got off the Standard American Diet (The SAD diet). I dont count calories, fat, carbs, and I don't measure portions. I just eat real food. No processed poison for me. Go to draxe.com. Its common sense eating that make sense when you think about it. Since following his eating plan(eating real food) I have lost weight and haven't been sick once.
