Went to update my address on my driver's license today, and they printed me a completely new one. New design, everything. At the bottom I noticed that it has a new number. The letters "DD" followed by a 16 digit number. Does anyone have any idea what it's for? I'm not liking it one bit. I googled it and on another form, a guy from TN called 2 different DMV offices and both referred him to the main office in Nashville, after calling Nashville, he was basically told not to worry about it but more or less, they didn't know what it was for. Other states have started putting it on licenses as well, with no explanation.

It's a secret government plot. That driver license will self destruct when you least expect it.
Or it may even have something to do with the Class D driver license non-CDL drivers use.

Here's an update on what I've been able to find out so far:
Today, I called two local "Driver Service Center" offices in Tennessee where licenses are issued. Offices were in Cookesville and Franklin. In both cases, I was told by the person I was (eventually) able to talk to that they had no idea what the "DD" prefix and subsequent 16 digit number stands for. Neither did the office supervisors, although the supervisors assured me that they had been told that the numbers were for "reference purposes" and had nothing to do with the driver or driver's driving records.
I was directed to call the main state office in Nashville if I wanted to pursue the question.
I called the Nashville office, and talked to a very friendly lady who said she didn't know the answer to my question, but would pursue it with her supervisor and see what she could find out. She promised to call me back.
Four hours later with no return calls, I figured I had received the typical bureaucratic blowoff. Then, to my surprise, the phone rang. I spoke again with the same lady I had talked to earlier.
"Virginia" had apparently pursued the question as far up the ranks of supervision as she could, and had finally received an answer. Her supervisor at the Department of Safety, main Nashville office, told her, "I don't know what it's for. I think it some sort of internal code used for tracking.... but tell the caller not to worry, it has nothing to do with him or his driving record."
So there you have it.... the official position of the Tennessee Department of Safety, as nearly on the record as I could get it, is a mind-numbing "I dunno."
Is there anyone who actually lives in Tennessee (I don't) who might be able to persuade their state reps or governor to look into this?
Clearly someone knows, or else the DD number wouldn't be on the license in the first place.

I asked the question to a THP officer this morning. Apparently it ties into a mandate for a nationwide identity system (Real ID)that is supposed to be operational by 2013. According to what I was told identification through this new system will be required to fly.

That Real I.D. mandate was passed in 2005 as a tool to use against illegal aliens and has been extended once last year as many states could not comply yet. More than 20 states have passed legislation or nonbinding resolutions that oppose or reject Real ID. Over 48 million in grants have been issued for this program and it is under such serious scrutiny even the TSA and Napolitano has backed off of the requirements now calling the less invasive form Pass I.D. Its all crap and designed to steal more tax payers money....
More here.... http://fcw.com/articles/2009/12/22/real-id-pass-id-dhs-deadline-drivers-licenses.aspx

Unicam, The trooper was making no argument for or against the REAL ID program. He told me that TN had tried to op out. But, supposedly those numbers are tied into that mandate.

SCN, I have no qualms with the Trooper or anyone having to enforce the laws, its a job, it has to be done. I am sure you probably know this better than most of us here. My qualms are with the FEDS (Repubs and Dems) and their free reign of spending tax payers $$ with no regard for what the taxpayer wants or what laws/codes are already on the books. If the FEDS would enforce their own laws that were already on the books many HUNDREDS OF BILLIONS would be saved in short order. Instead they devise ways to conduct studies, allow for grants on systems that are borderline if not completely unconstitutional. Sorry if my last post was confusing on this. I hold most LEO, especially State level, in very high regard!
