On November 2nd 2010, 90% of Tennesseans voted to pass an ammendment to the constitution to guarantee us the right to hunt and fish in Tn. This campaign brought all Tn. hunters together. Big and small game hunters, still hunters and houndsman, all worked together to help protect the rights and traditions of the hunters. Now our own agency is proposing to eliminate the rights of a portion of the hunters that helped in passing this ammendment. Whether you hog hunt or not, hog hunters are Tn. sportsman whos rights should be protected. This could just be the beginning, what if deer or turkey hunters are targeted next. I just think we should all stick together.

Houndsman, I'm interested to hear more about this issue. My understanding is that the hogs are completely out of control in certain parts of the state, and TWRA wants to expand the hunting opportunities however they can to hopefully help knock them back.
What am I missing?

I still don't understand the new Nonprotected proclamation...Not just hogs, but also starlings, english sparrows, rock pigeons... I just can't see how restricting who can kill the invasive species would help control the population. (speaking of landowners only being allowed to kill the species).
I carried a BB gun with me last time I went fishing down by the creek in case a starling flew by. Now by this new proclamation, I don't think I would be able to do that unless it was on my own land. Doesn't make sense. Just lets more of the invasive species breed on land where the landowners don't know or care about them enough to exterminate them.

What am I missing? It is being proposed to not allow hog hunts on the wmas and do away with hog hunting in Tn. You will only be able to kill hogs on other hunts (such as during a deer hunt) or if you are a landowner or have a permit from a land owner. They want to do away with dog hunts at catoosa and other counties across the state.

Some how we should be able to shoot a wild hog any time any where we see it. I hunt on a lease most of the time I should be able to take one any time. I am not the land owner, just a leasing.

the way I understood it was that a landowner and/or whoever is on his/her permits were the only ones allowed to hunt hogs? am I wrong or did I misread something?
I believe TWRA is following the "kansas" plan of attack on these hogs. Has anyone researched the plan that Kansas used to help control their growing hog population?
Is TWRA getting federal funding for the hog problem? Who is footing the bill? One report that I read said the plan cost the state of Kansas $450,000 but then dropped considerably after the first year. Several of the articles I read said what the hog population was of Kansas but I dont remember the number but I do remember thinking that their number couldnt even be close to the number hogs in Tennessee.
google kansas hog population and read for yourselves. I found several articles outlining what Kansas did.
I just read where Biggameguy said "Folks will be able to kill wild hogs on many of the East TN WMAs during big game or small game seasons. All other WMAs will not allow the take of wild hogs. If wild hogs show up on WMAs that are currently devoid of hogs, they will be removed by whatever means necessary by state personnel" so that answers my first question

Not to say it is happening. But I could see how the new legislation would not promote the need for some folks to introduce hogs into area's that are currently void of hogs.
