Isn't it strange to see the river with no traffic on it?

The barges are still moving down by Memphis.

Corp or Engineers are putting a stop to all barge traffic I heard on the news this AM.

That should really make things cheaper around here

Not true, you have to take the media with a grain of salt sometimes. The Corps does not have the authority to stop barge traffic, only the US Coast Guard can do that. Barge traffic has only been temporarily halted by the US Coast Guard in critical areas at critical times during this record flood (e.g. Caruthersville Flood wall when the crest was passing by that area). As of right now, I do not know of any areas from Cairo, IL to Rosedale, MS where barge traffic is prohibited.

Part of flooded Mississippi shut to barges in Mo.

Friday, May 6, 2011

The U.S. Coast Guard has closed a section of the flooded Mississippi River to barge traffic in southeast Missouri over concerns that ship wakes could push water over a floodwall protecting Caruthersville.
The town of 6,700 residents is seeing record flooding, with a crest of 49.5 feet expected early Monday. That would reach within a half-foot of the top of the floodwall. The Missouri National Guard has constructed a sandbag levee and earthen berms in an effort to catch any spillover.

The Coast Guard says that starting Friday, barge traffic is prohibited over a five-mile stretch of the river at Caruthersville for an estimated eight days, depending on conditions.

Their estimate of 8 days was high for obvious reasons. That stretch of the river stayed closed 24-36 hours until the crest passed downstream (strictly a cautionary measure for the town of C-ville). Closing a portion of the river for short periods of time, as was the case here, has little to no impact on river commerce in the big picture.

I had not heard that they have reopened the MS river.

I saw a barge on the MS River around 11:45 this morning, in between Mud Island and the Pyramid.
