2002 F150 4.6 is driving me insane.

At 40-50 mph truck is jerking and feels like tranny is slipping. Take it out of OD, let off gas, or give it gas and it runs great. No check engine light or codes showing. I've taken it to 2 transmission shops and both say its not the tranny or OD, but an engine miss. Replaced the spark plugs today and now worse than it was. I read on the F150 forum that the coil on packs fail and are a common problem. Well I found a pack of 8 on ebay for 90.00 shipped and plan to replace all of them next week. Any other suggestions or FORD owners experienced this?

i have a 2003 fx4 150 . the same thing happen to my truck i thought trans was going out .i just kept driving it after about 2 months the check engine light came on and it was a coil pack on the drivers side. that makes two that has went out. i am saying that is the problem. i heard ford could read codes with their machine with out the check engine light on but it will set you back about 80 bucks . a coil pack is only 20 or 30 bucks if i rememebr right . good luck

Thanks. I hope it fixes it. I bought this off ebay. Several members on the F150 site had good feedback. I bought 8 for about as much as advanced wanted for 1.

On my 2000 F-150 I had a very similar problem. Turned out to be a coil pack and EGR valve. Both very easy to replace on the 5.4 engine.

BigJ, it probably does but I'm not sure if has one for each cylinder or not. Some vehicles from the 90's had 2, one for each side.

Don't think so Big J,I think ford started using the packs midway in the 99 season.

That seems to be the biggest achilles heel on a 2000 and up ford pickup, but I would look into that overdrive switch to.Could be something as little as a fuse.
I would bet you only have one bad coil pack, which is a 10 minute job if you know where it is.Have them tested or test them yourself.Pull your Neg. Battery cable....................................Put your voltage meter on Ohms,

Use an ohmmeter to measure the primary resistance on the coil pack. Set the ohmmeter to 10 ohms. Place one lead on the center prong of the coil pack's electrical connector and the other lead on each of the spark plug terminals. The ohmmeter should read below 2 ohms. If the readings are above 2 ohms, have the coil pack replaced.

4
Measure the secondary resistance on the coil pack. Set the ohmmeter to 20,000 ohms. Place both leads on each spark plug terminal. The ohmmeter should read between 6,000 to 30,000 ohms. If the readings are above 30,000 ohms or below 6,000 ohms, replace the coil pack.

5
Reinstall the coil pack into the engine bay and reconnect all the electrical connectors. Plug the spark plug wires into the coil pack in the correct order. Reconnect the negative battery cable

Hope this helps..clean that EGR valve.

My daughter's Ford truck did that. Ended up being a plug wire that was broken. Drove me crazy before my brother finally found it. Was fixing to replace the coil pack when he found it. It's the 4.6 motor?

yes. 4.6 motor. The check engine light finally came on tonight on the way to work, so I stopped and had it scanned showing P0308 #8 misfire.

That's what her motor is... the 4.6. It ran so bad under a load. Sitting still it would rev up fine but going down the road it jumped. Heck, I still could get it up to 80 with the bad plug wire. I looked at all kinds of stuff and tried all kinds of stuff before he found the bad plug wire.

Update: Thanks to all for the info. I'm far from a mechanic but this wasn't so bad. The eBay coils arrived today and I changed out cylinders 1,2,5,6,8 and will change the rest tomorrow. So far, seems to have corrected the problem. I had the code cleared and hope it stays off.

Thanks again.

Just replaced 3 on my Expedition. Probably going to have to change all eventually. All I have heard is that when one goes, they will all have to be replaced as they will start to fail one or two at a time. It was not that bad to change them once I figured out what I was doing.
