With the flood waters here snakes are popping up all over the place. People in the town I live in are reporting seeing water moccasins, copperheads, rattlers and other snakes in their yards for the first time in years. These flood waters are pushing them away from the river bottoms into higher ground and people's yards and houses.

I just now talked to my cousins grandson who got home from helping sandbag houses all day. He said he saw no less than 18 water moccasins in the water and ever one in a low tree limb not 15 yards from him.

I would daresay the overwhelming majority of water mocassin sightings, outside the swamps of lousiana of course, are banded water snakes. To some folks every snake they see king coral spittin rattle mamba.

I don't know about that redblood, some of the places I used to fish in West Tennessee were loaded with moccasins. During high water, I've seen well over a dozen within a couple of hundred feet along a levee.

I agree. I spend time at Reelfoot Lake and seen enough plus growing up here in Western KY and fishing the river bottoms will teach you the difference fast.

Same genus, different species. These locals see them every time they go near a creek. I have waded every creek in these parts for the better chuck of 30 yrs and caught every snake I could get my hands and have yet to see a mocassion. Only mocassin looks alike liked the banded water snake.

redblood, if you want some excitement, go to North Lake this summer once the Mississippi goes down after a good thunderstorm. Walk the levee west of the ramp. If the water is high in the creek and the lake, there'll be a strip of land between them about three feet wide. You'll be sharing the terra-firma with a lot of snakes, many being moccasins that you would have thought never existed due to their size. The first pass they move. On the way back, they tend to have lost their sense of humor. Take a walking stick and spare drawers.

If you spend much time in the bottoms of west tennessee, it won't take you long to stumble across something besides a banded water snake.

Here's a little one.

They are common around here. I'm surprised when I don't come across one.

Kentucky Lake roughly makes a dividing line for cottonmouths, at least in the middle of TN. They are thick as ticks on a hound on the west side around Birdsong Creek, Camden Bottoms and Cyprus Creek where I have spent a lot of time fishing. I very seldom see any on the east side (Duck River Bottoms, almost directly across from Birdsong).

I live only about 30 miles east of KY Lake, and I have never seen a cottonmouth here (plenty of copperheads and quite a few rattlers, though!)

Can anybody Id this snake for me. I found it last fall while my wife and I were out doing some early season deer scouting. It was obviously non poisonous and acted pretty tame. I managed to get my wife to hold it for a pic and it got a little carried away. LoL Good thing the wife ain't afraid of snakes. \:D \:D We let it go and it just went about it's business.
Always wondered what kind of snake it was.
