I am considering taking a job in Houston Texas. Does anyone have specific information on public deer hunting or obtaining lease information in or around Houston?

What specifically do you wanna know plumbdaddy? Thanks to a newly opened highway I live 30 minutes from downtown Houston.

Public hunting isn't as plentiful as it is in TN.

Private land is all leased, and pretty expensive in most cases.

But there's great hunting in every direction within an hour and a half or so. You're three hours from the hill country, and about 4-5 from the Golden Triangle of south TX.

Thanks TX300mag,

I am trying to figure out the best way to find a lease or club to join. I know that anywhere you go the cost of hunting is rising. How do you like living there? What is the climate in the winter and spring.

when i lived in houston i didnt deer hunt only hogs in east texas, so i dont know about deer hunting leases or public land, but i can say i sure dont miss houston one bit.

I do actually know a lady who manages a lease out in Leakey texas, a few hours west of houston. She lives in houston, and I believe she told me it was $800 per gun on her lease.

She runs a pretty tight ship on that lease and i know she has kicked a few off for not following rules, but if you want I can give you her email or phone number.. pm me if you want the info

UPDATE
i just talked to her and she said the going rate in that area is 2500 but her lease that she manages is 1000 per gun this year.

Our lease is in Brady Tx in the hill country and we pay right at $2800 per gun. I am sure closer to Houston it would be cheaper but if you want good hunting you will have to travel west and south/west ;\)

I will email some of my contacts and see what I can stir up. You will find something I am sure.

When I lived in San Saba, Lampasas and Gatesville, I worked a lot of ranches all over the Hill Country and hunted around Llano and San Saba almost every day and some nights. Loved it.

Small deer but great hunting. South Texas is more expensive and not as much fun-my opinion-but the deer are a lot bigger.

Have no recent information but I am sure TX 300 can steer you right. Be prepared to shell out some serious money. Afterall, it is Texas, where baiting is a way of life. Have to pay for the corn.

Yes sir that is a great area. San Sabba around the Colorado River is a great area. Any where in that area is a dea ringer. Deer are plentiful.

The Pedernales runs through the area around San Saba, too. One of the most beautifull rivers I have ever seen. We had a large cow camp on the river and worked cattle out of it a lot. Had a big lean-to type thing we slept and cooked under and a pen for the horses.

We would stay for up to two weeks. Caught a lot of white bass right behind the camp. It was beautifull and situated to work the stock on three ranches. Has as many as 15 hands working out of there at one time.
