This is historic if they actually implement the plan. Essentially, they're weighing the possibility, for the first time since 1937, to intentionally flood many square miles in the MO Bootheel to alleviate flooding north of the area.

I believe they are referring to the land as basically no commercial buildings and hopefully very few homes, this land has always been in a flood zone and the owners were told time and time again that it will flood[ever since the flood of 1937], the day has now come for the flooding and they are voicing their outcry, its the American way

Im sure they will be compensated eventually for crop loss that will occur. My brother just got 2,000 acres seeded of the 5,000 acres he is working on in Weakley. Bet its pins and needles for alot of farmers right now.

I can see multiple court battles already between landowners, the government and the insurance companies if this happens!

Sacrificing a few to save many. Hate it for those folks but they knew the risk when they set up on that property.

I "heard" today that they were going to "activate" the floodway.
Anyone able to confirm that?

The Corps has been telling the people for years, DO NOT BUILD HOMES! DO NOT PLANT CROPS! WE WILL NOT HESITATE TO FLOOD THIS LAND.

Army Corps of Engineers Holds Off on Destroying Missouri Levee as Residents Are Rescued

The Army Corps of Engineers’ decided to hold off on its decision to destroy the breeched levee in southern Missouri after being hit with a federal lawsuit issued by the state’s attorney general after critics of the assessment warned about acres of farmland being flooded.

Attorney General Chris Koster and the Missouri Department of Natural Resources filed the federal lawsuit asking a judge to prevent the destruction of the levee.

Koster said the corps should first make sure other alternatives, like employing area reservoirs to take on more water, are exercised.

Absolutely not. The Corps is VERY tightlipped about floodway operations. You won't know until they evacuate the surrounding area.

I used to work at the USACE in college, and I was invited by my boss at the time to attend a Flood Team meeting during the 2002 floods. Governors of states call into that meeting, and it's headed by the Colonel commander of the Memphis district. The meeting is treated as TOP SECRET, and they say it's a prosecutable offense to leak any information from that meeting. It's where they assess current river stages, damage reports, weather forecasts, river stage forecasts, and other items.

They have various levels of activation before they even get to floodway operations. There have been numerous times where they have pumped the levees with explosives in preparation, but the stage never got there. It's a well planned and thought out operation, but we won't know until it's imminent.

Cool thanks for the information. \:D
Pretty interesting for sure.

I can't imagine building (or buying) a home in the floodway.

I wonder IF they "activate" the floodway, if they will video it ?
Bet that would be a sight to see.
Sad as it is however.

So to clarify, The floodway was set aside for emergencies. Then they allowed it to be developed? or is it just crops? If it's just crops, then say sorry, cut them a check and flood the place. If it's homes and such, find out who let them build and get them to cut the checks.

It's treated just like an easement. You build a house on it, most of the time, they'll let it go.....until it comes time to call in the easement. Then it's going to be tough turds.
