Dust, dust mites & humidity levels (moist or dry) are the three biggest damaging factors to mounts.

Todays mounting process is worlds beyond what was done say even 20 yrs ago. The basic process is the same but the materials and methods have changed greatly.

I dust my mounts at least twice a month with a quality feather duster and vacuum them (No high volume shop vac, just the house vacuum with the upholstery brush, gently)

My uncle has three mounts that were done from back in the late 50's & 60's, You can tell the difference between the oldest one and one of his newer mount done in 2001. The hair looks weathered on the older one, the colors are not as crisp, but overall the mounts are in great shape for being 60 yrs old.

My oldest deer was mounted in 1984. It still looks as good as it ever did. Placed along side my latest mount from 2007 you really can't tell any difference in age.

The main factor is who mounted it and what tanning method they used. Then proper care and what you mean by "last".

My great grandfather died in 1914. He mounted one before he died and I have no clue how they did it back then. It was suppose to go with me but one of my cousins pulled a quick one and took it when my grandfather passed. It looked really good for the age and only had one crack in the nose. Keep it dusted and there is no telling how long they will last. That's all the special care this one had in all those years.

Truth be known, it's probably screwed up now. I should have done things different but to keep the peace, I didn't. I haven't seen it since 1995 but it looked as good as the ones I had done in the early 90's except for the crack in the nose and some lighter colors.

I was told by some one to use wd40 to wipe it off with
Just spray a little on a rag and dust it off.
I do my turkeys Fox squirrels and deer heads this way.
I can't recall who the someone was ..but they had to have some knowledge of this method or I would not use it.
I have a Shoulder mount from 1990..21 years old and it looks like it just came from the Taxidermist

I was told by my taxidermist to lightly vacuum them once in a while, and to wipe them down afterwards with a cloth lightly sprayed with Pledge.

I was told by a old timer/taxidermist not to apply anything with an oil base, it will penetrate the hair and cause unnatural breakdown and only add to the dust attraction and more difficulty removing it.

If you are going to wipe them down, use a swiffer sheet or something of that nature.

If you want to shine out the hair, you can use any hair sheen product (spray on) that your wife might use. As for shining the horns, we use Pledge.

keep them out of the heat and sunshine and they will last a lifetime. dusting them a few times a year will simply help their appearance....

A taxidermist friend of mine recommends dusting the cape with a piece of light bread. He says the natural oils in the bread are good for the mount and aren't excessive.

I've got a old paint brush

it stays on top on my gun safe and all its ever used for is dusting the deer/ducks/pheasant/and bobcat mounts that I have.

If only I'd kill more then it would get used more

My oldest one was made in 1974 and it looks almost as good as it did when I first picked it up.

I usually take a duster and comb over it, then take a Q-tip dipped into vaseline and apply to the nose and bottom of the eyes
