bohunter 51, a discussion of the validity of electronics in the field is welcome but is more appropriate in its own thread. This thread is clearly directed toward people who use a GPS.
I have a etrex legend CX. I'm a big fan. It takes a lot of the worry out of exploring new places. Just make sure to have spare batteries with you.

Garmin E-trex legend black and white. Works fine and is easy to use and was CHEAP. Gets me anywhere in the woods I need to go and will get me out as well.

Bohunter 51. If you are worried about spending the money on the kids, why waste it on a license, bows, guns, ammo, and fuel to get you to the hunting areas. Seems kinda selfish to squander all of your money on" Play-pretties" for yourself when the kids need it so bad. You could buy meat a whole lot cheaper at the store than you can trying to kill the meat. Oh yea, I have an e-trex and topo maps and have even used them to find people that THINK they know where they were when they got lost.

If you use a garmin with the ability to download files to check out this page. http://home.cinci.rr.com/creek/garmin.htm
It is great for putting custom topo's of your hunting spot on your GPS.

Pmc,
How big of an area do I dare create a map for? Could I do an entire state if I wanted to, or more?
Thanks!

Depends on how big you memory card is.
Personally I don't like the idea of doing the whole state. Way too many places I'll never go.
