I have been to a few spots on wma's that have big corn fields and have seen several signs of activity around the edges of the corn fields. Are the corn fields better to hunt in the evening or morning or does it matter? Also, I went and hunted a place this morning and the wind was blowing 5-10 mph from the Northwest, I walked in from the north and went all the way to the southeast corner. Is there a possibility I spooked the deer with my scent when I walked in? I was quiet going in and it was dark. Im pretty new at hunting so I appreciate the help.

If the corn is still up, the deer are likely using it as a bedding area. Mornings and evening would both be fine, though, after moving comfortably all night long, I think deer are a little more at ease in the morning then in the evening when they are fresh from bedding and on full alert. Others will passionately dispute that, however. Hunt all day!

I would always try to keep the wind in my face going in.

What WMA are you hunting? that would give me a better idea as far as pressure goes. I hunt Priest and it is high pressure, so the deer usually don't hit the fields until after it gets dark or right at dark. Still there are those oddities where they will get in them well before dark. Like Poser said, hunt all day and you have the best chance to see when the deer are moving. And always watch the wind.

I would try to find a fairly thick "staging area" leading to the feed area. Like others said, always play the wind.

Yanahli is the wma im referring to. And the corn has all been cut but they still feed there. Im not sure how much pressure has been there. But I know I walk a lot further than most hunters do (all the way to the back corn field).

If the corn is cut, then I would get back off of the field edge into the woods -minimum of 30 yards.

Alot depends on what the corn is on the edge of and the size/shape of the field.. If it borders timber versus thickets or pine plantings, etc. You could see deer anytime but I think you're more apt to see them in the mornings if the fields border thick stuff. Otherwise I think the fields may produce better on the evening hunts. During the rut you could see chases into or across the fields anytime particularly if the have narrow points in the field.

erperry, are you talking about the corn fields in the Cheeks Bend area or another part of Yanahli? Me and a friend are going on Tuesday to Cheeks Bend and plan on starting in one of the smaller fields next to the cornfields. I also noticed some kudzu growing out there which is terrible but maybe the deer like to use it.

Not cheeks bend, Lofton Road, off of iron bridge road. I have never been to cheeks been but have heard a lot of good things about it. May try it later in the gun season.

I've heard of iron bridge too, but haven't found yet where it is. Google earth will show me everything though. Hopefully Cheeks Bend will do some good to me. I won't shoot anything smaller than 8 pt unless it's a 6 with good spread and mass. If I dont see any good bucks throughout the day then I'll take a doe for the meat.
