Either one of my squirrel dogs, the deer running mutts. Seriously, had a friend with a Lab that could track one better than a bloodhound.

Smaller dogs are more popular with the weiner dogs being considered superior.

Almost any dog CAN track a deer, but the smaller dogs tend to use their nose to ground scent the trail better. My old lab was pretty good but he tended to get excited and tried to run the line with his head up like a pointer instead of on the ground.

He would miss a turn in the trail and have to circle back a lot to find the check. He would also move fast and cover a lot of ground. Made it hard to keep up with him and was a load of fun going through briars.

Smaller dogs are better since they are lower to the ground where the scent is, tend to work a trail nose down, and don't move as fast making it easier to keep up with them.

There are some good books out there on training dogs for tracking deer. Google it.

I use a Drathaar too but like Fish said any dog can do it if trained properly. The most important thing is for the dog to be obedient and for you to be able to "read" the dog's body language. A dog's nose is like a deer's nose they never cease to amaze me.

RF270 brought up a great point.

First couple times you are training the dog, Every time after that, the dog is training you.

Gotta learn to read the dogs body language. Soon you will know what kind of hit you had on the deer, if the dog has a solid trail, if its off the track, if the deer is close, and if it is still alive.

Amazing to watch a good dog and "trainer" work a track.

roscoe the beagle took right to it with no training. we had one we couldn't find one morning and put him on the trail on a desperation move. 20 minutes later and 300 yds from where we were looking, he found it.

there are some things you are supposed to do before tracking with a dog. notify the regional TWRA office, dog must be on a leash and no weapons.

An group in the NE only use weiner dogs and respond to calls for hunters with lost dogs. We use Bloodhounds because I've found that they are able to stay on a single track and not get distracked if it jumps other deer or crosses other tracks. But, as stated proper training and trusting your dog are very important.

Boykin spaniels are very good at it.

I have a chesapeake bay retriever and she found one for me one time. I trained her to be a duck dog and I just gave her the "hunt dead" command and she instantly went to tracking. We hunt a lot of beaver swamps in very high deer density areas and after she found the first one, I decided it might create a bad habit while duck hunting, so I never used her again.
