How far are you willing to walk from your truck to your stand? I read somewhere that most hunters will not walk more than 400 yards from a road or their vehicle.

2 miles is a good estimate.

You have my utmost respect. I would quit hunting before I walked 2 miles to a stand.

I have walked further a couple times but I feel that 2 miles is as far as I'm "willing" to do it at this point. My typical hunt has me walking about 1.5 miles.

I am just trying to decide if I want to walk about 2 miles back into a WMA. There is a spot surrounded by fields that looks promising. They say the farther you go back into a WMA the better.

Do it. It will also give you a better idea of what the area looks like back there and you may have a Honey Hole spot on your hands. You can't find out unless you DO IT.

Thats a tough one to answer..Some stands are real close and can drive my truck to them pretty close while others are on the other side of the property and if i could walk a straight line,it would be probably 500yds,but I can't,I have to walk around the edge of the property on a road, which is about a half a mile.So I say half a mile is all im willing to walk..Because remember, you have to drag what ever you kill back out..I find it hard to believe that people walk over 1 mile to their hunting spot..Think about it,when you walk, you probably average 3 miles per hour..But factor walking in the woods,in the dark, while trying to be quite its probably more like 1.5 MPH..So people who say they walk 2 miles to their stand, thats gonna take atleast an hour to do so.Unless your a speed walker.. LOL Im not calling anyone out,Im just saying...

It takes about an hour and 15 minutes in some cases. Good trails that allow for that distance help a lot but in some cases those good trails don't exist. I feel that someone who goes that distance NEEDS to have a deer cart to get the deer out within a reasonable amount of time and with as little effort as possible.

The problem comes when you bag something hunting that far back. If it's bow season usually it takes too long and the meat is at risk.

I've walked up to 1.5 miles but try to limit my stands to within 0.5 miles. Theres almost always a road within that distance on the WMA I frequent. Carrying a treestand 0.5 miles is tough enough crossing ridges and hollers.

Then I go back and find deer tracks around my truck! Haha!

I often walk a mile, sometimes as much as 2. Solo recovery efforts are brutal, but when you are looking at a 5% success rate, its not that bad and just part of the game.

I don't mind the long approaches, in fact, I rather enjoy them most of the time.

I have some killer spots on 1 piece of property I hunt, buts its so far to walk to, I don't hunt it during bow season, because if I killed something,it would ruin by the time I got it to the truck. But I do hunt the heck out of it during ML and gun season, when its cool enough. The land owner doesn't allow ATV's on his land. And its a big creek bottom about a 70 acre flat, so you have to go down a huge hill,no way around it..That is what takes so long, dragging a deer back up it..

Its just part of it. As for speed, I'm not concerned so much about noise until I get within a quarter mile of my stand. So, on a 1.5 mile approach, I'll haul a$% for the first mile, slow down a bit, and then stop, cool down for a minute, put on my Scent Lok layers and slip in quietly for the last 1/4th mile.

I keep a deer cart in my truck during deer season. When I do make a kill, I hike back out and swap out my hunting gear for a Camelback and a game cart that folds into a backpack. This can sometimes mean 6-8 miles of walking with the last trip pulling the cart. Brutal, but again, all part of the game. If I were lazy and unmotivated, I'd go to the grocery store.

The stand I hunted Sunday, opening weekend of Muzzleloader, is a 60 mile drive, a 1.5 mile 4 wheeler ride, and a 1 mile walk. Started my 4 wheeler ride at 5:00 and was settled in my stand at 5:43. That is about my limit now.

When I used to hunt in Ceder Forest, I would sometimes walk 2 miles to stand set-ups. Killed a buck three bow openers in a row from 01-03. Haven't hunted there since we purchased our property that we currently hunt.

2 miles ain't bad if its flat. I don't hunt flat ground anymore.(New farm is far from flat) So the 1 mile is the max but not the norm.

350 yds from gate to edge of trail and another 150 yds into stand. Got my first deer last Saturday night right at dark. Longest 500 yard walk of my life on the way out in the dark dragging deer, stand and gear. Had a hand truck/cart which I am sure made it easier, however I still collapsed on bed of truck by time I made it out.

Im anywhere from 500 to 800 yards from my truck Id say. It really depends on the wind direction though. my parking place depends on wind direction usually so that I dont get busted on my way into the stand.

Here's one for yall. I grew up in NM hunting mule deer in the quadalupe mountains. You don't stand hunt there. You walk over and around brutal terrain, and prepare yourself to make extremely long shots... sometimes up to 500 yards.

My dad says one time when we hunted together, he figured from a map that we walked 17 miles in a single hunt.

the farthest i will walk is about 1 mile. reason being you have to drag it out if you kill it, or leave it and go get the deer cart. I know some take the cart in, but IMO it makes too much noise, so i don't take mine in.

around the house longest walk is probably between .5 and .75 miles. one stand is about a 200 yard walk. other stand sites are in between those 2. my favorite stand site on public ground is approx. a 2.5 mile walk. if i choose to tackle a bad, bad hill its a little closer to 2 miles. it takes me about 1 hour and thats stopping a couple times for a break. i use a cart to carry my stand in and leave it locked to a tree until the last day i hunt or kill, whichever comes first. its been worth it over the years.

as little as 200 yards and as much as 400 from my wheeler or truck. Hunting some farm land, the deer seem to not be too shy of vehicles. my truck never seems to spook them.

In the Bottoms, I park my wheeler at a creek, boat across, then walk about 300 yards in to the stand.

I can not imagine dragging a deer over a mile.....

I often times walk more than a mile during rifle season. Most adult men average 2.5-3.0 mph walking when walking steady without stops. If you walk 20-30 minutes to your stand site you have most likely walked a mile or close to it. Many mornings I leave the truck one hour before daylight so I can walk to my stand without being rushed and hot when I arrive. Some days I hunt closer to the truck too. It all depends on the day and the wind.

If you have a topo it should be real easy to figure out how far a mile is even if your trail is real crooked if you know where you are walking.I just scale a bread tie and use it to measure. Another way is you can time it or do a pace count really no reason to not know how far a mile is. You might not be 100% but close but after saying that, I have walked for what I thought was about three miles but found out later to be only about 3/4s of a mile. lol

Many mornings I leave the truck one hour before daylight so I can walk to my stand without being rushed and hot when I arrive. Some days I hunt closer to the truck too. It all depends on the day and the wind.

There is an area i like to hunt inside the s cherokkee that is a good two hour walk before day break if you want to be there by first light.

LOL! I thik you may be on to something...

I've hunted from the tailgate of the truck and shot a little 6-point about 2 miles from the truck. By the time we got him back to the truck, he was about 400lbs

On average I'd say anywhere from a 15-30 minute walk from the truck (however far that may be)

This morning I walked pretty rapid down a logging rd for right at 30 mins after I rode the 4 wheeler for a half mile. Then climbed a pretty steep ridge for nearly three quarters of the way. GPS says I'm 0.46 miles away. Of course I walked further than that since that's a straight line from here.

Might turn the tracker on for the walk out and get an exact measurement.

Every situation is different, I have walked anywhere from a minute to 50 minutes when necessary!

I walk about 300 to 400 yds on average to each of my stand locations, from an old logging road or from my Grandmother's place.

I would walk two miles to get to what I thought to be a good deer, but haven't ever found sign anywhere I hunt that deep from where I have to park. On average I'm walking 400 yards.
