Going w/ a friend to the Cheeks Bend area of Yanahli WMA and it'll be my first deer hunt. Not my first time out in the woods with deer but my first time using a grunt call and antlers to lure one. How should I use the grunt - just blow a couple every so often or during a rattle or what? Any basic beginner tips? I've even gone as far as to figure out how the grunt calls work and made my own with bamboo that sound pretty decent. I have plenty of shed antlers for rattling so I'll just pick 2 to use. So what should I know as a beginner to bring in a buck without making him too suspicious?

I would use the grunt tube every 15 minutes...I seldom use antlers. Unless the buck to doe ratio is 3:1 or better bucks really don't need to fight for some tail.

As I have yet to actually hear real deer sparring on a WMA, I wouldn't do any rattling.

I hardly ever rattle but last Sunday I got a wild hair and it worked. I rattled for just a few seconds and 10 mins later a big buck came in with his hair standing up. I'd try rattling just after daylight and maybe an hour before you plan on leaving.
Make sure the wind is right and you're ready because when they come in to a call its not the same as when they just happen by. They're usually very alert and don't hang around very long.

sounds good, thanks for the advice...I might only use the rattle once or twice but I'll bring it anyway. I doubt the buck/doe ratio is that great...according to harvest reports from last year there were more does than bucks harvested on yanahli.

I completely agree with this. The times I have rattled and/or used the grunt tube to lure a buck in they have been very alert and skittish and are always gone before you know they are there. It has happened to me more than once where they come in and everything happens so quickly I haven't been able to get my gun or bow up to take a shot.

OK thanks...how do they act when coming to the scent of doe urine? That's the only other lure I'll be using (code blue). Are they concentrating a lot more on tracking scent than finding the deer who grunted?

Are they concentrating a lot more on tracking scent than finding the deer who grunted? They will be either looking for the doe,and not stopping,or the scent will spook them, research shows its about a 50/50 thing.

seems like I should go real easy on all the lures...if I can just get a little interest in my general direction and then just sit still and quiet for a while maybe something will come our way. I'm guessing the best times will be right after sunrise and right before dark. If there's no activity during the afternoon and we haven't shot anything yet, we might go to a different spot to hunt for the evening.
