Thoughts on its use? I feel quite certain it deserved sole credit for bringing a nice 8 pointer out of a thicket for me last Tuesday morning. How often do youins make yours bleat? And how many times when you do it?

I can use my mouth to manipulate it better than the recommended method of just turning it over.
I few very short puffs or "mews" and then I put it away. Maybe it try it couple more times within an hour. If nothing, back in the bag it goes.
all in all, I really don't put a lot of faith in any calls. I usually try to pick a good spot, be still, be quiet and just watch.
I used to could charm the heck out of some deer with a grunt call, they must make them different today. I haven't had a deer come to a grunt in 5 years. I think the neighbors blow them like trumpets and they are used to them now. I don't know what happened.
My binoculars are more important than any calls.

I've had one for several years now,and I have never had any luck with it..Just this past sunday evening, had a buck grunting his head off in a pine thicket, and wouldnt come out.So I gave him 2 bleats with the can call, and nohting,i never heard him grunt again.Ive had this happen before.I've had alot more luck just grunting back at them with the grunt call.Wish I would have done that instead.

I have killed at least 3 or 4 mature bucks over the last few years as a direct result of calling them in with the can call. I have also called in many small bucks. I played with one small bucks and had him running back and forth to my stand grunting the whole time with the can call. One day at Catoosa, I probably had at least 10 different deer run to my stand responding to the can call. I have had very good success with it. Like all calls, sometimes it works and sometimes the deer aren't in the mood for it.

I have had two mature bucks who now hang on the wall come straight to that can call in the belief it was a doe. I was downwind of scrapes both times and in what I believe was the end of pre-rut so it must have been the right time. rather have it and not need it than need it and not have it.

I use mine mainly early season. I hit it 3bleats every 15 minutes on the clock. Just make sure there isn't one hanging around close when you hit it. I've had several does and young bucks come in to it.

Bought one last weekend, then realized I was just another sucker in the woods. $12 lesson learned. Got busted with Tink's on a scent wick sunday morning, lesson learned. I think I'll just be quiet, maybe grunt a couple of times on the hour, and watch. That seems to have worked better for me so far.

Most people that I know that have the can call actually scare the deer away when they use it because they make the "alarm bleat" sound instead of the "hey I'm ready to breed" sound. The "alarm bleat" call is when you turn the can over and just let it run out making the bleat. It warns every deer in hearing range that something is wrong. The esterous doe bleat is a shorter bleat, about one second long. If you've ever hunted around a bunch of does this time of year, you've heard it and know it's not the long drawn out bleat that most people with the can make. That being said, I can only remember one time that I KNOW the buck was coming for the doe making the bleat that I was making with my can. I usually use the can for putting other deer at ease when I'm sort of busted by them blowing an alarm snort at me. If they blow at me, I blow one 'snort wheeze' back at them ("tsh, tsh...tspheeeeew") at them which stops them in their tracks, and then either hit the can a few times or hit the grunt call about 7 or 8 times with very short grunts. This settles them down because they think it's another couple of deer and they don't run away blowing an alarm/distress call to everything in the woods. I've also found that if I just sit down and be silent after doing this, in about 15-25 minutes those deer will come over to see what the other deer (me and the calls) were doing.

BB Not saying you are wrong but I don't remembering ever spooking any deer with mine. I have had them ignore it especially in mid and late season. I know it sopposed to be an estrus bleat but I really think they are just curious about it and by mid season they are to shy to investigate.

IMO, I don't truly believe that there has ever been enough proof to determine what sounds deer make for specific reasons...
How many scientists go out and actually hear enough of these sounds to determine what they mean?
I've been hunting deer since 1974 and I've only heard one doe bleat and only a handful of bucks grunt.....
Maybe deer in pens make lots of sounds, but I don't think that wild deer do, simply based on my experiences...
if you are basing your success on deer calls or even scent, then good luck to you.
IMO, the best way to kill a deer is to be there when he comes in to range on his own, without you drawing him to you.
With that being said, I turned a small buck the other day with a doe bleat. he came right under my stand. I've also tried it many more times and got no reaction....
lol
good luck

I have called in several deer with the can, You need to be able to see the deer you are calling and call according to his reaction to the call you are using. ie. Can or grunt.

It's been my experance that the bleat sound the can makes to short. I usually blow through the hole on the bottom to make the bleat sound longer and adjust the tone. A couple years ago I had a very large buck come to my stand running and grunting. I missed the buck with all the excitment. I have called in several since then.

Let me add this. I missed a young doe once and it ran right under me and milled around. I was only about 8' from the ground and could hear it. It was making very short (one second) very quiet bleat like sounds. It was almost like it was a spooked child that was making a whimpering sound. I've tried to emulate that sound with no success in terms of deer reacting.

I tried it probably 25 times last week in Illinois with bucks in plain sight and fairly close to me, just to see their reaction. The best I ever got was maybe a second look, had zero affect on any deer I used it on! Grunt call got much more positive results, but only from 2.5 yr old and younger bucks.

buck roar works great 135 13 pt ran by with no shot called him back in in 30 minutes later; 8 pt just the other week pulled him off of does that he was chasing. Not to disrespect your opinion but they work for me. 13 pt in tndeer.com and tn registry.
