This past week end I went hunting with a friend of mine. He and I went to war together so he is still my friend but he made me sick. I set him up in one of my honey holes and moved a quarter a mile away. I heard a shot from his direction and text him. He replied that he had shot and missed. A few minutes later I hear another shot and got the text "buck on the ground." I came down out of my tree, took my orange vest and harness off, put my orange vest back on and walked over to where he was. This all took about ten minutes. As I was approaching his tree I saw a 4 pt trying to drag himself off. His back had been broken by my friends shot. I looked up and there was My friend still in his tree talking to someone on his cell phone. I told him "you need to come down and finish off your deer" and he replied its not going anywhere." I sat on a log and watched him take his time, finish his call and slowly come down out of his tree. All the time the youn buck was trying to escape. Again I told him he needed to finish off his buck because it was suffering. He fumbled around dropped a cap and pyrodex pellet and lost them. Finally he got his weapon loaded and finished off the buck. It was then that I learned that he had not even sited in his weapon. He is still my friend. We have killed many deer together through the years but for just a few minutes I thought about never hunting with him again due to what seems like his lack of regard for a animals suffering. I am pro hunting. I have killed deer for over twenty-five years but such actions as my friends MAKE ME SICK.

I know the feeling....invited a friend to come hunt once, he shot at a deer and I went to help him....he was still in the tree...he said he thought he'd missed, and wasn't gonna look for it cause it ran off....he said "don't worry bout it, it was ONLY a doe".
Well...turn'd out he had hit it, and we did find it.
I won't be asking him back.

There have been several heated debates over this same matter on TnDeer.

Just keep teaching, and harping. Pressure him kindly to take it seriously, or take it home!

I'm not sure you can teach compassion. You either have it or you don't. You either care an animal is suffering or you don't.

Ditto BSK and being in the military, he may have grown thick-skinned to that type thing. I could totally understand someone who's gone thru that kinda thing, didn't realize that until just while ago.

That can be tough, man.
Sometimes even "good friends" can do things that violate your ethics or "code of hunting decency." That's hard to handle, no doubt. It's not that they've done anything illegal per se, but its just not "the way it should be" as you understand it.
Like seeing someone post a self-filmed hunting video on YouTube set to a death-metal soundtrack. It's not illegal, but I think it's incredibly tacky and ridiculous. In my opinion, what hunting means to them is no where near what it means to me.
I think you did the right thing by voicing the need as you did to eliminate the buck's suffering as quickly and humanely as possible, as well as "waiting on a big buck or shooting a doe" next.
If he's truly your friend - i.e. he really knows you - I suspect he got the message.
If he didn't... Better to stay friends and just not hunt together as much (if at all). Sometimes that's just the way it goes.
