i have to say i'm glad i went to see our system at work once again. we can be proud to have a sounding board for deer hunters that listens to our input. now it's up to the TWRA to see that our current checkin system improves. PMC & Fishboy put a lot of time and effort in their presentations. the talk that Troy gave particularly hit home with me !! i think we might have opened some eyes and should see some positive improvments in checkin regs & followthru on BIOLOGICAL data as well(we shall see).....DJ, @ the break i overheard two guys saying" i don't know who that 1 guy was that got up and talked, but he looked like he could do without a couple of hamburgers "

The system does work!
While some of us were on different sides of the issue I can say that I am proud to know all of you guys that showed up for the meeting. PMC, fishboy, hunthard, fordman, crooksite, BSK and Rldel. The only way to ever get anything done is for us hunters to go to the TWRC meetings and express our concerns.
While you guys didn't get TeleCheck you did show the Commission and the Agency that there are problems with some checking stations that need to be addressed. That was a major accomplishment. Had you never started the TeleCheck controversy there would have been little change. Gentlemen, a few hunters making a little noise can make a big difference in this State.
And PMC, I had a counter for everything you brought up ----except the data you presented where you called the checking stations. That was some very good research. You caught me off guard with that one. Good Job! You need to e-mail BGG with the ones that you found were no longer check stations so they can take them off the list.
I am thinking very seriously about creating a check-in problem page for deer season that will e-mail any problems to the right people.
CrookSite, They were just jealous of my out-standing physique

PMC, that 36 hour concession is huge. It's not telecheck but it's a lot better than what we had. Now I just have to figure out how to store deer peckers for 36 hours.
David, that checking-in problem page is an excellent idea. I am sure it will shed some light on some real issues over the course of a season.

i pretty much agree DJ. PMC and others poured out a lot of MAJOR time & effort for this cause to affect change. we can see how a large group of tn.hunters can make it happen. realalisticly we all know change does not happen over night. however when we fight amongst ourselves with name calling put downs like sanctimonious, and patronizing remarks like-you just fail to understand,i told you so and the like -is conterproductive. i like your idea of a forum to report checking station short comings and more. ...the fact that many of the check stations that were listed to be operational, were in fact not! some agency faces turned red on that one. bottom line tndeer.com is a in my view the pulse & heartbeat of the tn. deer hunter. i'm just an old fart thats past his prime, but it's good to see a few young bucks that aren't afraid of standing up to affect positive change. hats off guys

IF the proposed rule change is approved, You would be allowed to tag your deer, butcher it in the field and get it on ice, and check the deer within 36 hrs. Proof of sex would need to retained until after the deer is checked in.
Im still a little confused on the wording but the way I understand it, check stations are NOT required to view your game in order to check it in. You would need to keep the proof of sex in case a game warden checked you prior to your checking the deer in.

I DO have one question about a proposed rule change for turkey hunting. When they proposed that 20ga and smaller be allowed with #4 shot, it looked like the way it was worded that this rule change meant that ONLY #4 shot would be legal for turkey.
Anybody have more information on that?

Game Eye - If I understand correctly you could butcher them in the field. But I am sure we will get clarification from the agency.
Fishboy - I was confused by the wording too.

I completely agree.
And concerning "proof of sex," you can butcher the deer, but as long as you have the head and complete hide, that is good enough.

Just for clarification I asked if the head and hide were proof of sex and we were told you had to keep everything left over from the processing until the animal was checked in.
I was wondering the same thing about the turkey regulations. The way I read it is that #4 is what you have to use. I am very leery of using a .410 for turkey hunting.

Yeah and my gun doesnt pattern #4 worth a hoot. It likes #6 and at 25 yards I can put the entire pattern inside a coffee can. I would much rather put 90% of the #6 pellets in the head/neck/kill zone than to hit a turkey with 2 #4 pellets.

from what i recall about the proposed turkey shot requirements was # 4 a minimum. don't understand why the twra would propose a change to include 410 shotguns LEGAL for turkey. that defies logic just so there will be less felt recoil for the young hunter , thats whackey !

There were a couple of other major changes that hunters should be aware of. Oak Ridge will drop the antler restriction and go to a 2 deer limit from a 3 deer limit. TWRA stated they were against dropping it but the DOE wants more deer killed on Oak Ridge and is forcing the issue. The Agency is trying to get it reinstated but it doesn't look good.
Oak Ridge is a perfect example where we hunters dropped the ball. We had a chance to have something real special at Oak Ridge. We didn't kill enough does. We have only ourselves to blame for this one.
There are a lot of changes for South Cherokee, to be honest I'm not sure I understand them well enough to discuss them. Maybe BGG can post one of those charts.
If you ever want to see how to get something done at a commission meeting you need to watch the Dog/bear people. They were there in force. There was one minor item that they didn't like and from what I understand there will be a meeting in Sweetwater with all of them and the TWRA to iron out their differences before the next Commission meeting. Gentlemen that is power - there is less than a 1,000 of them statewide but they show up in force with a common agenda.

I am happy with the 36 hr. allowance . I addresses my main concern , and that is closed checking stations . Sounds like you guys had a informative and productive meeting . My hat's off to the guys that took time off to attend the meeting . Thank you for representing the concerns of hunters on both sides of the issue of telecheck .

Don't worry David, I was going to shoot holes through that as well...
Seriously, I have a feeling PMC used the old check station list when he called the check stations. As of March 31st (turkey opener) the check station list on the TWRA website had been directly linked to our main database. That means if a check station closes (and we are notified), it is reflected on the website instatntaneously. Also, prior to the meeting, I used the last issue of our Big Game Check Station Guide (2004) and had one of our employees go through the entire list and highlight all the check stations that closed at 6:00 pm or earlier. It was only 15% not 25%. Regardless of the number, I felt 15% was even too much.
Anyhow, I think the new 36-hour rule will alleviate the vast majority of complaints. I also like the check station problem idea on the web.
All-in-all PMC you did a great job and I really appreciate you sending your fact sheet in advance. I really think we'll see some positive changes to the system that will make checking in big game much easier.

Winchester,
Had you been there you would have heard the whole story. Kentucky's age data was mentioned (once very breifly) but it was prefaced with a cavet and was an answer to a direct question from a Commissioner about Kentucky.

Did you highlight all of the check stations that close early on Sunday afternoons too ? Your percentage will go up , because more check stations close early on Sundays than they do during the week . You might want to highlight those that close at 7:00 pm also , because in early bow season it's tough to get a deer out of the woods and to the checking station in time .

Sounds like it was a good meeting guys!!
Couple questions ,.. will you be allowed to butcher in the feild on the weekends TWRA are collecting data? Seems we would be losing some data on weights verses age if that was allowed!! AND,.. whats up with moving counties back to unit B such as overton, jackson, stewart? What data was presented to cause this change?
David J,.. haven't seen you around in awhile, hope you and yours are doing well.

You really do love to seek out and make personal lashings. If you ever read and comprehended you would have seen a ton where I have commended the tons of good which TWRA has done, however that concept escapes you or you just choose to only pick what fits your childish agenda.
