So then is it ethical to hunt with a .223 even though it is a .22 caliber?

sure it is, just like any other weapon, if the person is farmiliar with the capabilitys and limitations of what he is using...

Oh I don't know, I think sometimes it is....But I have found out that it holds true more often in firearms than it does in tenderlions....
