I killed a buck Monday that was a heavy 4 pt. with a 13 inch spread.... This buck dressed out a 135 lbs. and appeared to be between 2.5 and 3.5 years old.... When I got the meat back from the meat processor yesterday I found a little something extra in my bags.... It was a clear baggie with what appeared to be a partially expanded 22 cal. round (my 50 cal. blew right through)... It looks like somewhere in the past this deer came in contact with a poacher in the mountains of E. TN... Not surprising in the area I hunt with all the locals...

I first thought that this deer might of had bad genetics but the bullet might of explain why it was just a very large 4 pt....

If he survived the bullet, chances are it did not have that much of an effect on antler growth. he just had a bad hand, genetically speaking, they don't all grow up to become monsters, no matter how old they get.

AR-15's are .22 caliber and I have taken several deer with mine using a 75gr Hornady BTHP. I have never had to track a deer shot with it, and have never NOT killed a deer after shooting it with the AR. And this is legal!

I don't know any deer hunters that use a 22 cal. Give me a break, common sense comes into play..... Gee weez...

I do all the time and perfectly legal. Maybe you need to use some common sense and realize every hunter loses a deer sometimes, why does it always have to be a poacher.

There are several legal 22 cal rounds.
Not until this year!!

Illegal weapon (caliber) + Shot deer = poacher!!!

I skinned a 8pt this weekend and it had a old hole in its ham. The skin had healed around it. I guess this is more common than you expect.

You are the first deer hunter that I have ever met that legally hunts deer with a 22 cal. weapon... I have been hunting for over 30 yrs... I'm wondering if its ethical to hunt deer with a 22 cal. Not much margin for error but I guess you could always tell us what a great shot you are...

You must not know many deer hunters. Both .223 and 22-250 are legal 22 cal rounds. There are tons more, if you would like a list of all legal 22 cal rounds I'm sure I'll be able to compile a list. I probably own half of them.

When I'm talking about 22 cal. I'm talking about a 20 grain bullet.... Not compared to a much bigger grain like the .223- or 22-250...

I haven't seen many 20 grain bullets for the 22cal lr. Most are 33 to 46 grains. Maybe a 22 short?

Nah, I won't take the 22-250 til I've cut a few in half with the 257 Wby. A bullet traveling 3600 ft per second tends to make a mess! \:D
