While we have wild hogs on our property from time to time, I have only seen any on one occasion while hunting, which was several years ago. They were on a dead run and looked like a freight train crossing over the ridge about 60 yds below me. There must have been 20 of them.
This morning (I was actually on the same ridge, but further down) I heard something running, and got ready for a buck chasing a doe (after I determined that it wasn't one of the 10,000 squirrels or chipmunks that had been playing tricks with my mind all morning).
Two pigs came over the ridge above me, moving from my left to right at about 80 yds. The one in front was slightly larger, and was a blondish color with some black mingled in, while the one behind a little smaller and jet black.
They were moving at a pretty good clip, and while I had the gun on openings as they would cross, I didn't take a shot.
But, they soon stopped at about 70 yds slightly above me. I could not see the blond one at all, as it was behind some trees, but could see from the mid-section to the back legs of the black one. I leaned out from my tree, but still couldn't get a glimpse any further up.
I actually think they might have been mating.
While I had the scope on the back legs of the black one, I did not take the shot. I hoped that one of them would step out and give me something better, but it didn't happen. When they moved, they took off over the hill.
So, I guess my question is should I have tried to have taken the back legs out on the black one and then reloaded to finish it off if necessary? I am having serious second doubts about not trying it!

Let the lead fly on those critters! I understand you waiting though- because they might have moved into the open for a better opportunity.
I've got the hunt coming up next week hopefully I'll bag something.

I agree with those who say shoot them regardless, but if you have an opportunity a shoulder shot, like a deer, is lethal. At closer ranges or with an accurate rifle, head shots either to the ear, when shooting from the side, or between the eyes, when facing forward, will generally drop them in their tracks.
Moral of the story: Shoot Every Hog You See With Whathever Weapon Is Handy!

Next time squeal real load and grunt a little too. Often they'll freeze for a second to see what's the danger when they hear a squeal.
If you were wanting to keep the meat, you probably did the right thing. Those suckers can take a load and keep going. And with a little fat layer sealing off the bullet hole. There might not be much of a trail to follow.

IF You hit the femoral artery, that hog could bleed out in 30 yards.
I accidentally hit a 250lb running sow in the back ham with my 7mag and busted the femoral artery. She ran about 30 yds and fell over dead. Huge pool of blood where she fell.
I don't recommend taking risky shots on hogs unless you are just trying to wound and kill them without regard to recovery. IF that's the case, then you should reconsider your ethics.
Wild hog is excellent eating and should not be wasted. IMO you did the right thing by waiting for a better shot.
Hogs are tough critters and the fat and hide tend to cover wound channels making for tough blood trails if you make a poor shot. When picking your shots, the heart is a little lower and further forward than a deer.

If the only shot I had was at the back half of the animal I would shoot for the spine where it meets the hams. That is extremly doable at 70 yards (or should be) and won't ruin the hams or the tenderloin. It may very well take a follow up shot to dispatch it but its not going anywhere...I have taken that shot on deer more than once and would not hestitate to do again if thats the only opportunity for a shot on an animal I want to kill...

I agree totally. If you ain't never had hog problems consider yourself lucky. They are hard to get rid of.
