Hey all, I posted in the general forum but figured I might get faster and more replies over here assuming the thread doesn't get lost quickly (but I'm glad I found a deer hunting forum as active as this and for Tennessee people).
It'll be my first deer hunt and I'm going with a friend to a part of Yanahli just east of I-65. If you know what the map looks like, it's the area between the big "U" in the Duck River just east of the interstate. I very roughly calculated it at around 800 acres or so of area that I'd like to hunt (that's plenty).
If you don't know the place by the map but you've hunted there then I'll put a link at the bottom of this post to the spot on Google maps.
This is off Cheeks Bend rd. Plenty of woods and fields, from the satellite it looks like a great spot. when scouting other places in the past I've often found that if it looks good on the satellite it might be good when I go there.
Anyone hunt this area, or any part of Yanahli and have some advice for me? Thanks
Here's the spot on google maps. Here

I hunted over in there on and off for several years. You better get to huntin it before rifle gets here thats all I can tell ya. When rifle comes everybody and there momma piles into all the yanahali they can find. I will say there are a few good bucks on the Yanahali but you definately have to put the work in for them because they are extremely sensitive to human pressure and wind. If you want a possible good hunt, you better get there way before daylight and get to walkin, walk as far away as possible then when you get to "BFE" walk further. I met a guy that has killed several big deer off of it, and he explained some of his techniques and it was amazing the tricks he pulled just to keep people from finding out where he was going and what he was doing.

I have hunted the cheeks bend area and other Yanahli spots a lot this bow and muzzleloader season. It is some hard hunting. It also is coverd up with muzzleoader hunters. I second what Drenalinxt08 said WALK---. My best hunting area off cheeks bend is 1.1 miles from truck (checked with GPS). Look close at some of the small patches of land. Yanahali is really broke up. Everyone seems to concentrate on the big chunks. Have found beter hunting now the pressure is on in the smaller plots of land

I was thinking that too, maybe the smaller corners are better anyway because one would tend to go to the bigger areas. well I'll see what I can find on the map. Google earth is my friend.

I've been keeping an eye on the yanahali which borders I-65. Very little pressure compared to years past. I've had to work all week and after monday morning there has been a couple of days of not even being a truck there, on both sides. There is so many people that crawl yanahali usually, the only productive time to hunt it, to me is bow season during the week, and put your walkin boots on.

This is my first year to live/hunt in Southern Tennessee, recently moved from Northern Alabama. I hunted Yanahli Mon-Wed and had some good luck. Monday morning shot a nice basket six pointer. Tuesday had a hang fire on a slightly bigger buck, which I missed, and passed on a four pointer and two small does wed morning. This may all be first year luck, but my strategy is pretty simple. Hunting public land in Alabama has taught me not to hunt the deer signs but rather look for signs of other hunters. Find the thickets with funnel points that most hunters aren't willing to walk into, or small patches of land that most hunters ignore. Get into stand early and quietly.

Thanks again for the advice... Today me and my friend went out to scout a bit in the Cheeks Bend area. About 800+ acres of woods and fields and I think I narrowed it down to one spot that's a smaller field, mostly overgrown with brambles (we even saw some deer in there) and a small puddle with a lot of deer tracks around it. Seems like a fairly good spot and we didn't hear a single gunshot in the 3+ hours of scouting and it's muzzleloader season on a sunday.
On the way back out there were a few trucks parked by the gravel road but they were all somewhat close to the entrance off of the main road...it seems to me like not many hunters hike all the way down the the southern end of cheeks bend. Hopefully we'll get that area to ourselves on the 23rd getting there in the morning before sunrise. It's a decent hike to get from the gravel road to the field I chose. Hopefully there's at least one decent buck in there.

Yup thanks, so far it's all coming together nicely, got all the gear we need and now a spot to hunt and then just over a week's wait before we go hunt. A few weeks ago I was thinking I wasn't going to get the chance to deer hunt this fall, with college starting and no private landowner permission to hunt and no gun....so I loosened up a bit and decided to try the WMA and bought the permit and my friend has the rifles which I don't have yet so we're set for a good day trip out to Cheeks bend.
