He has killed several deer but he has been cursed with nothing but bad luck when he hunts with a muzzleloader. He shot at his first ML deer at 7 or 8 and shot a tree instead. The next year he shot one and the landowner wouldn't lets us go back the next morning and look for it. He had 3 caps go off on a doe one year before the gun went off, he reloaded and a 10 pt walked up and the gun had a hang fire. He shot a doe that bled good then just disappeared. Two years ago he shot a 6 that bled good going down hill but quit when it went up. This year he shot a doe that went down and when he shot her to finish her off she jumped up and his brother killed it 5 hours later. So maybe this one broke the curse.

As far as his shooting ability, other than with a muzzleloader he has to track one deer he shot with his bow. It went about 100 yards. Every other deer he has shot he saw fall.

I posted a pic of the jaw in another post. That is a 2.5- 3.5 year old deer. Out of 6 people to age it 4 said 2.5 and 2 said possibly 3.5. The deer had a big blocky body and dressed over 100 lbs. My son shot it thinking it was a doe.
Fascinating. Obviously a buck with some serious antler-growth problems.

On a side note, just to clarify the way things should be checked in...
That deer should not be checked in as a button. It should be recorded as a two-point, with antlers less than three inches. By definition, a button buck is a buck fawn (six months old). These will have pedicels still covered in fur. A hardened antler, no matter what the length, will be indicative of an adult buck.
If you look at our harvest reports, ( Harvest Reports ) there are three categories of bucks: antlered deer, button bucks, and antlerless bucks. Antlerless bucks, like the one shown in the pic, are adult bucks with antlers less than three inches.

then there are a lot being checked incorrectly. we have shot several over the years with exposed bone less than 3 inches and all were checked as 0 points. i have never seen the 2 pt w/less than 3 inches option.

1 of our group killed 1 in KY just like that a few years back. Thinking it was a large doe. Dressed at 170lbs. We thought it to be 3.5.
