I can guarantee that my little 30 acres in Sullivan County OR Cherokee WMA are better than hunting in west central Florida. Well worth the 12 hour drive. Yeah, there are definately exceptions. One thing that I imagine holds true for you is that it sounds like you are hunting the same areas year after year. If that's the case, it seems that doing so helps build a knowledge base that can make up for the distance.
Yeah, especially since this is the first year it's EVER been hunted. Just getting a good feel for the place and have a few stand sites picked out for next year already.

when the sunlight is fading quickly, and you are in nasty swamp 1.2 miles from your vehicle, you'll think real hard about the next 4 hours before taking a shot. The other thing that can be unnerving about coming out of a swamp in the dark is when you cut the flashlight off and everything around you looks the same. Poser, have you ever hunted areas with hogs? If so, have you ever had them walk up on you in the dark coming out or going in? Twice in MS, I have had that happen. Scary!
Yessir, I have had them come right up on me in the dark and you are right, that is a intense encounter.

Been a long time since I was on "the other side" myself. After several leases took up most of the previously public hunting land, I've confined myself to my own private land. But, no complaints here, I love the feeling of hunting where my Dad, and his Dad before him have hunted. It's like going back in time when I'm out there.
How exactly did leases take over the public land?

Exactly the case for the land around me too. Not necessarily richer folks, but hunting clubs mostly.

there was a time when it was worth the 3-4 hr. drive to hunt some of the middle tenn. counties. the last 3 years we went, nobody even saw a deer. i haven't been hunting west of roane co. since the 90's.
