Sunday morning I shot an 8pt around 9am as he crossed a logging road. When the smoke cleared I saw him running away with his right leg broke. He was pretty much broadside when the shot was made, maybe very slightly quartering away. I felt very good about the shot.

At around 10 I get down from the stand to check the blood trail. 15 yards from where he was shot I picked up a good blood trail. I start follow the trail which is very good. At about 50 yards from the original hit halfway down the steep ridge I jump several deer. There were 4 does around when I shot and they ran in the same direction as he did. I thought it could just have been the does I jumped. I could not tell because it was very thick where this happened. I decided to back out just in case he was with them.

I went back to camp had some lunch and returned to the woods around 1:30pm. My father joined me to help in the search. Picked up where I left off still following a good blood trail. Once we reached the hollow a good 100 yards from the shot we jumped him. Unfortunately I couldn't get another shot. He is still bleeding fairly good. We followed him another 50 yards trying to get a shot and bumped him again. So we decided to back out again.

Went back at around 4 followed the blood trail another 150 yards or so until it ran out. No sign of the deer around where the trail ran out. Unfortunately I live 2 hours from our land and had to leave Sunday night because of work.

It sounds like I missed the vitals. I have broken the shoulder before and always found the deer. The question I have, is it possible to break the front shoulder and not hit vitals on a broadside shot? Second, Is there a good chance that he still died even if I missed the vitals?

I am going back this weekend to continue the search. This would have been my best deer ever. I am really sick about the whole situation.

For what it is worth, I shoot 100gr of 777 FFFG loose powder with a 250gr shockwave.

The blue tips or the yellow tips? you must have missed my post about my disdain for the jacket sabots offered for inline ML(s) these days. the common trend i got from it was either shoot all lead bullets, but give up some range, or shoot Barnes bullets. I shoot the shock wave (blue tip) and have not to my knowledge hit a deer to date with one, but have had mixed results with Power Belts and heard mixed reports on Hornady SST.

I would keep looking if you busted his shoulder he will probably die IMO.

Sorry to hear that, one can only guess at whether or not he will make it.

A few years ago my (now brother inlaw) shot a good buck perfectly broadside shot like you said. He called me and i went and helped him look. Trailed the deer all day long finally right before dark we jumped him a got another shot in him. He had shot low and hit the deer in the leg on the opposite side of his body. Guess the deer had his off side leg back and thats the one he hit.
