SO yesterday, Leave work early Im on stand at 2:00, get settled in and am enjoying the day. Im in the very back field of a WMA one way in one way out. At 4:25pm (30 min til dark) a gentleman walks right in front of my stand I get his attention in hopes he will back out. He apologizes three times, and says "im just going on down the fence row" 15 seconds later 20 yds past my tree, he shoots from the ground. Walks through the field, into the neighboring thicket. Cant find his deer, so comes back and climbs a tree 20 yds from me!!!!!

Please if you are walking into public land late and you mistakenly cross someone, be a sportsman or at least have common courtesy and back out, and for crying out loud dont frikin shoot from under that persons stand!!!

Sorry I had to vent! Good luck to all.

good luck with that man! ive hunted public land for many years now. and everyone is for thereselves! i feel you pain, try to hunt where the deer go to escape from pressure! works for me! i like hollers or points leading into pine thickets. i have had people walk right by before daylight and hunt only 100 yards away, but i was where the deer were coming into the tickect. i killed deer and they didnt. u got to hunt a different in those situations, you got to know what deer and deer hunters are doing! good luck and just know that there is never a easy way to hunt public land!

When I scout public land, I look for signs of other hunters as thoroughly as I look for deer sign. Pruned limbs, climber scars, fire tacks are just as important signs for a public land hunters as scrapes, rubs, droppings and tracks.

Once you know where others are hunting, look for ways in which the deer are avoiding these areas, gaps in pressure and "junk" terrain that others are simply unwilling to hunt.

Once you determine where others are hunting, try to determine when they are hunting: mornings, evenings, weekends? This can also be useful information.

I did some in season scouting this weekend intending to check a unscouted area of a property. I found two semi-permanent hang no stands with semi circles cleared out around them (No TWRA numbers, either). Initially, I was disappointed, but was able to quickly figure out how the deer are avoiding these locations and scout out potential setups accordingly.

By the nature of these two stands, I would expect that these guys are hunting them frequently and at the same time. Its a team of two. They are identical setups, though different brands of equipment. They are both quite expensive setups which implies that they are used frequently (not many people leave $300 worth of gear on public land only to hunt them occasionally). They aren't far enough a part to have been placed by the same person for the purpose of having 2 stands (if they were, that person is a idiot for having 2 stands with the same wind direction over the same terrain feature). Due to the frequency these stands are likely hit both by the owners and a few others likely taking advantage of a free setup, the deer are completely avoiding this small area.

Public land hunting is a completely different mind set than hunting private land. Public land hunter = human avoider.

Had a mountain biker come by me 4 times yesterday. On the second go round I was thinking of shooting a squirrel. On the third go round I thought about climbing down and beating him over the head with his bike. On the fourth go rounds I was thinking about shooting his front tire and watch him face plant. Of course I wouldn't do any of that...cept maybe shoot a squirrel. Oh he saw me. On the third time I happened to have a phone call and took it since I probably wouldn't see anything anyways with all the traffic. I hope he heard me call him a "turd burgler on a huffy" to the person I was talking to. I hate public land but I'm stuck this year.

Why would you hunt that close to a trail on public land?

The worst is when you think you have found a good spot and see a crappy hangin stand there. If you go back to that area and that person shows, they'll try to claim exclusive rights to that piece of public land. I mainly hunt public land and I try my best to be courteous at all times.
