I checked an area of my property this morning. I've held out of there all archery.

nutshell: 10acre thicket runs right up to 100acres of oak hardwoods. Along the edging of the thicket is the typical scrapeline. But, these scrapes are 10 yards apart and one oak sapling in particular has three licking branches and there are 3 hot scrapes around the same tree.

is this some sort of "sign post" scrape. I've never seen deer lay down multiple scrapes under the same tree.

I put up a stand 75 yards down into the woods at noon, gonna hunt there this afternoon. I will see what's up if possible.

Sounds like a primary scrape to me. If that's the case, you have the motherlode hunting area on your hands. Be careful how you proceed so as not to screw it up.

Yea I agree, it sounds like a tree that multiple bucks are using. I normally have a place on my property that has 2 scrapes under the same tree but I don't hunt really close to it. I hunt about 250 yds away in a funnel. Good luck man.

Sounds to me like you got a bunch of young bucks and does hitting the same area. I'd be surprised to see a mature buck around there during daylight. Could happen but I wouldn't bet on it.

A primary scrape is several scrapes around a single tree or area. If this is in fact a primary scrape area, subordinate bucks and often mature bucks will visit it at one time or another. The largest scrape started may have been started by a mature buck.

Does will visit this area to hook up with the biggest stud around just before they come into estros.

As we move into the pre rut, this will be the most productive setup you have on your property. Again, just be careful. I would stall on hunting it until the pre rut is established. It will be a short window, but could make your season.

We don't seem to experience these primary scrapes as much as the Midwesterners do. The Midwest seasons are shorter and more intense where the Southeast seems to me to be longer and more complicated. If you do have a primary scrape on your hands, count yourself lucky, be careful, don't hunt it too early or too often. On morning hunts, you need to be there super early to avoid spooking that (potential) mature buck who may be nocturnally scent checking licking branches for estros does. The moment the pre rut hits, I'd be all over that area on all day sits.

Thats what it looks like to me. A natural egde that the deer like to stage in. A man might get lucky, but most of the time that kind of thing is done in the dark. But throw in the rut and who knows....

tried this afternoon. Nothing!

I even waited in that stand until I could no longer see. I wanted to try and listen for activity.

I decided to get up outta there and give it a few days rest.

In 2007, I killed a deer in this same spot that scored 128". I wasn't hunting any sign in there then, I was in there just on a hunch that it might be a "good spot"

All of this scrape activity has just popped in the last 4 days, even on other parts of our property that I've been bow hunting. I was not seeing any scrapes and then it was like a light switch was flipped on.

Stick a camera on it and see what happens. I usually don't hunt over the "Signs" as much as I hunt the area. Most mature bucks will be hitting those scrapes at night. I just like to hunt the general area in hopes of catching him on the move. Basically hunt the does, and you will get your buck.
