i have a peice of property that im hunting and its known for big bucks! there are 6 people hunting. me, my dad, my grandfather, and 3 other guys. one which im good friends with. me and him have agreed to let small bucks go and let them grow. we have both killed big ones. i filmed 6 different buck sat and 4 does. incuding a nice 7 point i got pics of. the problem is, that everyone else shoots and is going to shoot every buck they see! i cant get them to let anything walk! so these bucks that im getting pics of and letting walk are just going to be killed by other people. what would ya'll do? i want to kill big ones and do have some pics of some. but also, i hate letting these " border line" bucks walk and just have someone else shoot them! anyone have this problem and how do you handle it?

I deal with the same problem every year in ky. I only bowhunt and let any buck under 140 walk. Some get killed by others, some don't. I can only kill one buck so I want it to be a good one. By doing this, I have not killed a buck since 2007. I have had chances since then, but operator error cost me. :0
I know it's very frustrating for you, but I would be upset with myself if I lowered my standards. Not all your bucks will get shot. After a few more years, letting the smaller ones pass won't hurt so much. Keep showing the bigger bucks from your cameras to the others and soon they will pass wanting a shot at those bucks.

If it was my dad and granddad I would let them shoot whatever they wanted to. The time you spend with them in the woods means more than any buck you could kill.

They may luck up and kill one in the rut but chances are, they are going to mess up and miss seeing the big one. Keep hunting the way you are and hopefully it'll pay off. If they shoot the first buck they see, it's usually going to be a little one.
Good luck... and try to educate them every chance. Out of all the good bucks I have killed, only one time was he the first one to show up. They don't get big by being stupid.

Some good advice by others. Might try asking them if they would like a shot at a big buck? If they say yes, then you might ask them why they shoot the little ones then? They dont fall out of the sky at 5.5 w/ racks dreams are made of. Have to do the work. Part of that means passing those bucks up for yours and other hunter's dreams to become reality. Alot of those bucks you pass will get shot. I pass tractor trailor loads of young bucks every year, alot get shot, it sucks, but you have to walk the walk. Best of luck.

I've been surprised many times by the caliber of buck that exists even on highly pressured areas. I ain't saying they are going to be easy to kill, but sounds like most of these guys are only hunting a few days out of the year anyway. So really, what are the chances? They'll take out 2-3 bucks during gun season, but it won't hurt you overall. -don't expect Lee and Tiffany to show up your property, but you'll be ok.
I hunt a small, 50 acre tract several times a seasons. It is surrounded on 4 sides by extreme pressure of "shoot anything that moves" type of hunters. On groupe of guys cut a highway parallel with the property line so they can intercept deer moving onto this property. I have also observed these guys shooting at deer running full speed, 400+ yards away.
I have been pleasantly surprised to see a couple of bucks that have survived into their 3rd season. I suspect that there is at least one 4.5+ year old out there as well.

Hunt,
You are probably the one that will get the big bucks. You scout them hard and work hard, so your hard work should pay off. They could get lucky and score with a big buck, but there is nothing you can really do about it. I'm pulling for you, now get a big buck!

if it makes you happy to shoot it..then shoot it. If not, let them enjoy the chance to kill. Some of these deer will survive and it will be challenging but you can hunt them. Make you a few sanctuary areas. I'd say They will abide by a sanctuary rule better than antler restrictions.

What are your goals? If you need meat than take the small ones...if you want something bigger let your family take the small ones.

To some not killing deer is not fun. If you want to have fun, kill some deer! I thought you should understand this HuntFUN!
Seriously, if you want to shut down the fun, then start imposing rules on others.

i think you misunderstood the question! i asked if i should let the little ones walk or shoot them now, bc everone else is. like i said before, i dont care what the other guys shoot. just was having hard time letting these border line deer that i almost would shoot walk knowing i could have killed them. but it has nothing to do with being mad at everyone for hunting the way they do! i like seeing people have a great time hunting!

I think everyone who steps their standards up a notch or two experiences this. If young bucks no longer give you the thrill and you decide to match wits with older bucks then hold out for older bucks. Simple. I would never shoot a buck that I didn't want or weren't happy shooting just because someone else shoots them. If that's what makes them happy so be it. If you think that drastically cuts your odds down then you can either purchase or lease land, or hunt somewhere else that possibly has restrictions matching your goals.
