I posted a topic on here last week regarding bore sighting and how trust worthy it is... After being ripped a new one by some of you I finally asked a friend to shoot it for me. He was having a hard time getting the caps to fire, but was able to get one round off (it shot low about 4 inches). I thought I had some bad caps because they are a few years old and he was loading pellets instead of powder. He was able to get the ML back to me in time Friday night, so I cleaned it (again) and rechecked everything and we decided to meet early enough Saturday morning to finally take a couple of practice shots and fine tune the new scope (in the headlights). The same thing happened to me as the day before. The firing pin seemed to "drag" a bit and not slam against the cap/nipple. The second time was a charm. The gun fired, we adjusted the scope and repeated once more with the same "miss fire". Once; I was happy with the scope adjustments (but bumfuzzled by the cap issue) we set off in time to get in our stands in plenty of time to beat daybreak. As luck would have it; around 8:30am a group of does come within 20 yards of my stand. I pick out the biggest one and the same thing happens (the firing pin is not hitting the cap/nipple hard enough to make the cap explode. This is not a "pop-fizz" issue). Re-cock and re-shoot at the doe until finally the 3rd time is the charm... Fortunately; she stood there long enough for me to settle down and complete the task at hand.

I have been going over this in my mind since saturday morning trying to figure out what I did differently and it has finally dawned on me. I used a different type of oil at the end of last season when I cleaned and stored the ML. When I took the gun apart to clean it this morning I noticed a gummy film. I've had all of the parts soaking in cleaner since about 10am and it is still gummy. I've had to switch to paint thinner and a scrub brush and am just about finished... Only Rem oil for me from now on. I've learned a valuable lesson. Hopefully; nobody else will make this mistake.

Yea you have to be careful on which oil to use, some will gum up on you if applied heavily and then stored. But Rem oil is the only thing I use too, can't go wrong with that. Good luck with it man hope you get her back and performing like new.

Take that gun down and use some carb cleaner or some of that shogun cleaner that is an arisol and blast it out. Let soak for a while and blast it again. If you can take your gun al the way down to the firing pin that's the best. Scrub it down with a green pad or steel wool. After all clean yes use a good lube that won't gum it up. I like graphite lube or Teflon but any will work just with regular petroleum oil you will need to do this more often.

I wish I had read your earlier post. I had the same thing with my CVA Optima a few years ago, only it wasn't gummy as much as it was rust around the firing pin. I put oil in it and kept working the pin back and forth by holding the trigger down and pushing the hammer in and out. At first the oil came out the firing pin hole very brown, but each time it cleared up a little more.

If you use a water-based solvent to clean, make sure that it doesn't drain into the firing pin area while being stored, and make sure you oil it properly. (Not too much, not too little)
