The flash at night will be how they would find it. Cameras are fairly safe during the day time. But at night fall or before dawn when the trespasser is walking in or out of the area when the flash triggers it gives away the cameras presence.
They would probably think it was a UFO and try to get on TV.

I have...and I've got some nice pics of trespassers on my property...I use multiple cameras when I'm away from various angles...amazing what you will get pics of...

I protect all my cameras by locking them to the tree with a cable lock. Also if i get a picture of an unknown person I move my camera. it doesn't matter if it is on public or private property, I move it and yet to have one stolen.
It is easy to place your camera up high as others have mentioned and then it takes a lot of work to steal.

Up in a tree would be the place to put it. Out of sight.
bingo! out of sight out of mind! angle down and for all means, turn flash off if you can. or use ir! been getting pics of trespassers since 2004 where i hunt. never ends!
