LOL, there is no such thing as a cover scent first off, deer can discern several smells at once. And for the smoke deal, people dont do it for a cover scent, its because the smoke actually impedes the growth of bacteria, hence keeping you from stinking as quickly as normal. Sorta like smoking meat, keeps bacteria from growing! I myself dispise my hair and clothes smelling like smoke, and will take the scent free as possible route myself!

Soot and ash are almost all carbon... So it would make complete sense that this would work. I'm gonna try it!
Would probaby make some good camo paint as well!

I think some people have ,a bit more trouble with scent then others
Myself I have rarely been busted by scent They hear or see me but I must not smell as threatening to the deer as other people. I have had deer walk almost to me ...I know they smell me.

[I know some cagey old hunters who lay their hunting clothes near a camp fire so that they get "smoked". They swear that it is the best cover scent you can use. It makes some sense.
Well, if you think you can "cover" human scent with other stronger scents, then it makes sense. But since you can't...

I use to work for a local water company, and the most common water softner is a product called aquadean. Which is a odorless granule. As far as chlorine goes its odorless until it is contained. For example a plastic bottle of tap water, swimming pools, and water spickets that have backflow preventers that are seldom used,etc.... Oh almost forgot chlorine in tap water is supplemented in a gas form, a leaking chlorine cyclinder is odorless so you have to use a spray bottle of amonia totest for leaks. The amonia will start smoking if leak is indicated.

The most dangerous smell is YOU! Deer smell the human scent! That is the main one to try to deal with. About the only thing you can do is shower before hunting - to get clean and remove as much of the dead skin cells as possible. I also cover as much of my skin as possible when walking into my stand (gloves, long sleeves) to keep dead skin cells from getting on limbs and on the ground.
As far as cover scent...as Winchester said, deer can discern many scents at one time. Back in the day, it used to be popular to put skunk scent or red fox urine on your boots when walking to your stand to "cover" your path in. I always chuckled to myself...because I could almost read the deers mind as they sniffed the ground, they would think: "There is some stupid hunter walking next to a skunk, whatta dope."

Did anyone else read that article I was referring to? It may have been in Field and Stream. It would have been 5 to 10 years ago.
It was about a man who could still hunt so slowly across a field that he could routinely touch unsuspecting deer and had even done it with coyotes. It told how slowly he moved. It told what he used as camo. It mentioned that he rubbed burned campfire wood and ashes over him before he did it.
I would love to find a link to that article. It was an amazing story.

I still haven't found the article, but I did find the man who it was written about. His name is Tom Brown Jr. He is a pretty unique dude. Google him when you get a chance.
