If you gun hunt, especially centerfire, not necessary. But, the closer you get to the deer and the more removed you get from shooting houses and ground blinds, the more important role camo plays.
So, depending on your style and methods of hunting, more or less important. I agree with poser, if you gun hunt you dont need anything but be there.Never saw the need of camo in a box blind or pop up blind.if you bow hunt during late season you need Jesus with and some good camo will help also because its tough. Got that right. And, you have to get high up in a tree to get away with enough movement to pull a bow back. No camo made will cover up the movement of drawing your bow!
Thus getting high up in the tree.

Camo mainly gives me confidence. No way could I be confident in a pair of levi's and a red flannel shirt or solid color. It may not make much of a difference but at least I am confident. I also mix and match alot like others. I do like Mossy Oak though.

99% of the time i wear cheap camo pants that are about 4in too short and my green lacrosse hip boots(a must where i hunt) with a bottomlands drake jacket. the other 1% of the time i hunt feilds and i normally jus wear my flannel lined carhart pants with my drake jacket....hardly ever busted and have had them literally 5ft from the bottom of the stand

I wear camo primarily to cover a bit of my movement. I can be restless at times. I mainly wear cheap camo these days. And all my base layers are black. Like the other poster had mentioned, why do you need camo if your layerin up?

The other problem if you want to buy hunting clothes in more "traditional" colors and patterns is that it isn't available in tans, browns, or more traditional colors anymore. I buy hunting clothing because of functionalibility, weather and waterproof qualities, and it is hard to buy hunting clothes that are cutting edge that arent camo.
Cabela's has some that is just muted shades of brown blobs - it's called outfitter camo. Columbia has some wool with a very similar "pattern" or lack thereof.

The bug suit with good cover is hard to beat. Its very inexpensive and you can put on whatever you want under to keep warm or cool. I use mine on every hunt I go on. Turkey or deer.
