And seems like the only time they are offered (when you do find one)is smack dab on some smoking hot Saturday DURING deer hunting season.
I never see classes offered during summer-

That's a tough one, for the simple reason that the classes are volunteer-led. I'm continually asked, "when is the next class?" Well, the honest answer for me is, when I and the two guys that teach with me decide we have 20-25 hours to donate.

I'm admittedly new to this, having first led our own class back in January '10, and another one in October, so I've got a lot more time to put in before I start seeing patterns in attendance. But I'd venture to say that in the heat of the summer, not many potential students thinking hard about getting their HE certificate.

Stovepipe, you ought to become an instructor, and maybe fill in some of the gaps you recognize!

i may be mistaken but i believe any hunter under 10 must be accompanied by an adult that must remain in position to take control of the gun.

I know that is the case for Youth Hunt weekends, but I am not sure about other times.

page 16 of the hunting guide under general regulations-mandatory hunter education:
"...Those under 10 years of age do not need a Hunter Education certificate, but must be accompanied by an adult at least 21 years of age who must remain in a position to take immediate control of the hunting device..."

Good find, Stik, thanks.

I guess the questions that remain:

1) Why have an apprentice license at all?
2) Shouldn't the accompanying adult on any hunt be HE certified?

Yep... you hit the nail on the head... My son is 8 years old and he shot his first deer this past Saturday... The only time he had his hands on the gun is when the deer walked in front of the stand... I was right next to him the whole time....

I think the regs cover this very well... My son probably could pass the test now but I know he could at 10.... However, Even if he is 10, he will not carry the gun until I know 100% he is ready

Here is Crossville there is a HE class towards the end of August every year. Its set up to be as convenient as possible and the instructors do a great job with the young'uns.

If you miss the class you have the option of taking it online and getting with our local WO for the shooting/handling portion.

You know the line in the sand has to be there and for good reason. I am a firm believer that any adult taking a kid should go through the course as well as any kid in the woods. Every child and adult has different maturity and education levels, I would personally feel much more safe knowing that everyone in the woods was on the same keel.

I'm also a very firm believer that it is the responsibility of every parent to train there kids often on gun safety and hunting safety. At the age of 6 my son was one of the safest hunters I knew. At 9 I would be more than willing to let him hunt alone (if the law permitted). I also have friends that have kids older than my son that I wouldn't turn my back on if they had a weapon. It's all about teaching and raining. And HE only goes so far, the real training is at HOME.
