How many will drop a doe with a buck trailing her or even a lone doe that is showing all signs of being in heat? I've killed several under both circumstances and in a matter of minutes or less, killed the buck that was with her. A few times I've taken a doe right out from under a buck's nose and still he came back. I've had other bucks come in and bed beside the dead does even horn hooking them trying to lift them off the ground and get them on their feet...quite a show. It's worked enough times for me that I will continue to do so if I'm also interested in taking a doe on a particular hunt. This has worked on 3.5 year old bucks or younger but not on older bucks thus far. Two years ago I had an older buck on a doe in a pine thicket. two or 3 times he ran her out of the thicket giving me a shot at her but he refused to come out. Each time she went back in after him. Her last trip out I dropped her on the spot hoping her laying on the edge would draw him out. No go. He vacated the area after the shot.

The last part of your post is why I would never shoot a doe I suspected of being in heat , she is a drawing card for sure . The show is on !!!!!

I let one walk the other evening because I saw something chasing her in a thicket. She came out and walked by and the buck followed in about 3 or 4 minutes. It was a cow horn spike, but it could of been a nice one. No, I wouldn't shoot if I thought she was "in".

I only do it in desperate situations, like the last day of the hunt during the rut, or a truly giant buck with her and no other choice for a shot at him, or something similar. I would rather have that hot doe roaming all over my hunting area for the entire time she's in heat vs. relying on her previous trail and dead body to draw the buck im after in that very day. She may go right on by and lead the biggest buck in the area by my Dad or one of my boys an hour later. Its a high stakes gamble that will sometimes work, but I like my odds better with her alive if at all possible.

no i would not because i know a guy who was hunting unit L and he shot the first doe that came running by, he did not see a buck following her so he shot but the buck was just out of sight at the time and when it took off around the hill running he saw it. but it turned out to be good for his son because the buck ran off in his direction and he killed it. it was 125" 8pt
