Family dog shot and killed in front of 12-year-old girl
ATOKA, TN (WMC-TV) - Neighbors in a Mid-South community are feuding over a shooting that killed a family's pet.
Gun shots aren't the norm Atoka, but police say a gun was fired from a neighbor's house Saturday, killing one of John Beckman's dogs.
"My daughter could have been shot," Beckman said. "The neighbor helping her could have been shot."
According to Beckman, when his 12-year-old daughter Anna answered a door Saturday at their home, two family pit bulls darted out and across the street to their neighbor's yard.
According to a police report, that neighbor, Morgan Ewing, ran inside his home, grabbed a shot gun and fired at the dogs, hitting the Beckman's dog Bronco.
"I seen my dogs laying there dying, bleeding like crazy," says Anna said.
Bronco died on the way to the vet.
Ewing didn't want to go on camera, but his wife, Melanie, sent Action News 5 a statement saying this isn't the first incident they have had with Beckman and his dogs.
According to Melanie Ewing, two weeks ago the dogs, "chased me to my house & stood in my garage growling. A week later two of those same vicious dogs ran out of their front door, came to our property & aggressively chased me & two of my children into our home. We have not played in our front yard in over a week."
The Ewings said one of Beckman's pit bulls tried to kill their yellow lab.
Anna Beckman says since the deadly shooting, she's scared to stay at home by herself.
"At night when my mom and dad are out, I'm watching my brothers, and every little noise scares me," she said.
Morgan Ewing is charged with intentional shooting of a domestic animal and reckless endangerment. John Beckman, meanwhile, has been cited for violation of a leash law.
Both men are set to appear in Tipton county court November 12th.

I would have probably done the same if I felt threatened. Pitbulls aren't a joke. They will tear your [censored] up.

If they were chasing and growling at me on my own property, the dog wouldn't have died on the way to the vet. I would have made sure he was dead before I put up the gun.

yep it would have died around here also.when you keep a animal you are responsible for it.that includes keeping it contained.its doubly important when you have a breed with a bad reputation.glad to see the dog dead & not a human!

John Beckman sounds like a moron. "My daughter could have been hurt", ignoring the fact that his dogs are menacing other people.

I can see both sides of the story. If you feel threatened by an animal on your property, I feel like you should have the right to shoot it.
Unfortunately, in the PC world we live in, there are necessary steps (contacting the owner, police, animal control) that must be taken before you can legally take the action this guy did.
Triple S method of management.

Any dog that growls at me on my own property dies, simple as that.
It would have been a non-issue because it would have been dead the last time.
