hey all
i have a tough question, i rarely have a deer wind me to the point of snorting, but when i have deer come to with in 15 yards they smell me, they dont run but will usually walk off the way they came, this ****** me off to no end, i do the whole scent lock thing, wash all my clothes in no scent soap, basically try to control my scent as best as i know how
do you guys have any tip's , have any of you overcame this hurdle
also one other question off this topic, my taxidermist has not returned my (several calls)
do any of you have any taxidermist recommendations in the knoxville area

Personally i dont feel you can do anything to beat the nose of a deer. With that said i believe every extra step you take does help but there is no 100% scent free methood.

Hunt the wind and the ridge tops. Bottoms are tricky because of the swirling wind but can be done. Also, one thing that most overlook is thermals. Your scent will rise as the temperature rises, which is usually in the mornings, and your scent will drop as the temperature drops which is usually in the evenings. Try to stay away from bottoms in the evenings.

to be ohnest ,this is the first year i have ever paid attention to the wind, i have killed alot of deer over the years , some good deer, but i have always had this problem,
this week end in the am i am on a top when 2 does come through, the first stops , turns and trots off
was near the bottom of a point this mrning and same thing with a 4 point
the wind thing is hard because it seems like it blows all directions
how do you guys play the wind when oit is like that

Well, I am no expert, but since I have been on here reading as much as possible about the issues I have had, I have learned to "hunt the wind". I guess I had one of the best days using the wind yesterday morning. I got busted by two deer just before daylight, but I was walking in a hurry to get to my stand and jumped them about fifteen yards away! The wind was neither at my back or in my face but blowing across from my left. Another buck came from behind me later and had crossed my trail and never acted like he smelled me. Now, I wash my stuff in Sportwash and then store in airtight containers with fresh earth scent wafers and some fresh acorns. That seems to work for me and sure beats the days of watching deer smell me and then either take off or look up and spot me!

I don't have a scent problem either. I don't use scent lock clothes. I use the sport wash also when washing the clothes. But I do put them in a scent lock bag with the fresh earth waffers. When out hunting i liberally spray down with fresh earth scent, all clothes and boots, and wear 3 fresh earth scent waffers. This seem to do the trick for me. I don't hunt the wind, cause if I did, alot of times the places I hunt, I would not be hunting.

I wash my clothes in dead down wind and keep them in a scent blocker bag. I wear scent blockers dream season xlt for bow season and muzzleloader season and i also wear muck boots and i think wearing rubber boots definately helps alot. But in my honest opionion no matter what u do u will not be completely scent free but every extra step u take will help. I always hunt the wind and if the wind is not right for my set up i will not hunt it. It sometimes is aggrevating cause u may only get to hunt a set a few times a year only because u cant get the right wind but id rather stay out than get busted by the big buck im hunting. And like someone else mentioned pay attention to your thermals alot of hunters dont take that into consideration. Good luck to everyone this year and be safe and god bless u all.

Play the wind as much as possible. What you are experiencing is what you can expect from a successful scent reduction program. You can't make yourself scent-free. The point is simply reducing your scent to the point deer don't blast off snorting when they get down-wind of you. Deer sneaking off the way the came is the best that can be expected. Now it's up to you to choose stand locations where deer are least likely to move downwind of you.

If possible, try have multiple stand sets so that you can play different winds for the same travel routes. If the deer are consistantly using the same trail where they are winding you, try to set up on the other side of that trail where you will be downwind of them when they come by.
I know that isn't always possible. Just a thought.

Male sure the towel you dry off with is scent free as well as ALL of your equipment. I personally think scent free is only half the battle. I like to use natural woods smells on top of a scent free wash. Fox urine on my boots, sometimes doe pee wafers in my pockets. I'll spray my tree I'm sitting in with something as well.
From watching deer in the woods I have noticed that when ones scared, they all are. And when one checks something out and then decides it's okay, the others do as well.
So based on that premis I like to have the other smells of animals on me. If the deer smell me a little but then also think another animal is close by, they don't seem to spook as easy.
