If you gun hunt, especially centerfire, not necessary. But, the closer you get to the deer and the more removed you get from shooting houses and ground blinds, the more important role camo plays.
So, depending on your style and methods of hunting, more or less important.
I agree with Poser. I do however buy the cheapest camo available and use it until it is unusable. My main outfit is Long sleeve T-shirt over a t-shirt or over thermal shirt and $19.99 pants over thermal underwear. Every once and a while break out the coveralls. I invest so little into it, because i know it is just necessary enough to need.

Anything that breaks up your appearance is what is key in my imo.

I disagree that camo is overrated. Camo is not for the times when you are still and deer don't see you, it's for the times when the deer does see you and has to decide what you are.
I agree completely but I do have some problems with camo.
Breaking up your pattern of a man is what is most important so when you do get spotted, deer don't know what you are and figure your harmless. If they see you and put together in their heads....a head, two arms, two legs, standing upright...danger danger I'm outta here.
Also, there is a lot of camo out there that is hurting you more than helping. Hang your camo up on a bush...stand back 30 yards and if you can make out an outline of a person so can the deer. Prime example is Mossy Oak Breakup. One of my favorite patterns but it is too dark for most situations. It's best to use things that don't match top and bottom. Example is a woodland pattern pants and a Break up pattern jacket. Deer won't see a pattern.

yes i agree 1000% on mismatch camo, seems some folks like to "look good" but a mismatch patter is a great way to break up your outline. I also agree on the Mossy Oak, it is almost black if you are in the shadows which actually makes you stick out. I never understood why camo makers have never really used yellows and orange colors on the pattern...
as for the question of how high is high enough. Just depends on what you can see, however i try my best to get a min of 30ft up if i am using a climber. When i hunt in bama in pine flats I try to get even higher.

Camo is definitely one on the least important things in my entire arsenal, and I bowhunt off and on through the entire season. Im pretty sure I dont own an exact matching set of camo, and if I do its by chance. Camo will probably help some in breaking up your outline, but background coverage and most importantly "movement" is what really matters. The material and functionality of my camo is much more important to me than the print on the clothes.

The other problem if you want to buy hunting clothes in more "traditional" colors and patterns is that it isn't available in tans, browns, or more traditional colors anymore. I buy hunting clothing because of functionalibility, weather and waterproof qualities, and it is hard to buy hunting clothes that are cutting edge that arent camo.

So, depending on your style and methods of hunting, more or less important. I agree with poser, if you gun hunt you dont need anything but be there.Never saw the need of camo in a box blind or pop up blind.if you bow hunt during late season you need Jesus with and some good camo will help also because its tough.

Got that right. And, you have to get high up in a tree to get away with enough movement to pull a bow back.
