Yep I hate to see them broken up bad, but it could be worst, atleast next year it will grow back, vs an injury where it may never be normal again!

It's still like walking on marbles in my area!
Dont get me wrong....there are acorns falling like rain everywhere on our property, BUT the actual quality of each acorn differs. Sitting in my stand on one of the 1st mornings of bow season this year, I heard acorns falling ALL OVER the place...some even hit me in the stand. Now, that would lead the average hunter to "assume" there is a GREAT acorn crop. Well, being the nosy, persistent, and obsessed deer hunter I am  - I went to where the majority of the acorns were falling that morning. I started opening up acorns and MOST were either rotten or had worms in them, etc (not edible, atleast not preferred by ANY means compared to other food sources). I started searching everywhere for good acorns. What I had found was quite suprising to me - only about 30% of everything that had been dropped were good, quality acorns. Hence - Again, another bad year for acorns seems to parrallel the lack of sign we are seeing. (And when I say "bad", I mean "not a massive crop" - maybe a more normal crop)
The last 2 years have been loaded with acorns! And it seemed as though you couldnt walk 20 yards without seeing a sapling or some type of rub, scrape, or where it looked as though bucks had been fighting
All this said, I LIKE years with a POOR acorn crop  
This year is turning out to be exactly what I was hoping for

I'm not sure what to make of this, but I saw a buck the other day and got to watch him in the field for 5 min and his rack is just big main beams with no points. He has really small browtines and a couple, inch-or-so stickers on one side. He's big bodied and great mass.

You're kidding right? Many have posted how their local acorn crop is very poor. This is the worst acorn crop in my area since the late-freeze/drought season of '07. You really have to hunt to find any acorns on my place. Just an individual tree here and there producing any acorns at all.

I notice in BSK trail cam pics I dont see alot of busted up antlers. I harvested 3 bucks on a property last year all 2.5 or older and my nephew harvested 2 bucks as well and all had broken tines. All had at least one tine damaged but most had multiple tines damaged. Is this an indication of anything? Buck/doe ratio? Any thoughts? Although I suspect that the buck/doe ratio is linked to this by some means, I would lean more towards the food production (mainly acorns). I heard of quite a few hunters stating that almost every buck was "busted up" last year....I think the main cause of this was due to the abundance of acorns. Just like other posts mentions, in good acorn years, you are more than likely going to see more rubs and "rutting activity" in general. I think this is linked to the amount of energy they are consuming from the abundance of all the acorns that givin year. Years such as this year, (atleast in my area), there arent NEARLY as many acorns as the last 2 years. As a result, we really arent seeing that many rubs. This all IMO relates to them being "busted up" and the abundance of sign in good acorn years. Saying that they arent busted up this year because a lack of energy, would be a pretty good guess as far as I'm concerned from the "lack of acorns".

on this piece of property Im seeing the busted racks I have only found 5 or 6 oaks. And they were all red oaks. This property is 88 acres of mostly fields with patches of cedar/pine thickets. Along the creeks are lined with mostly maple trees. Not sure why this property has no white oaks but in the 3 years of huntn it Ive yet to find one.

My personal farm is not far from yours and I checked a few weeks ago on mast crop and every one of my 8 or 9 stands are in white oaks. Everyone of them had the ground covered under them.

It never ceases to amaze me how localized acorn production can be. I'll be interested to hear what the Cathole guys have to say about their acorn crop, as they are virtually next door to my place. But I did notice there were virtually no acorns at all in the road for the 8 miles from my place back to Buffalo.
If I had to guess, I would bet no more than 1 out of every 50 white oaks is producing on my place. Perhaps 1 in 20 red oaks is producing, and about the same for Mountain Chestnut Oaks

I have a buddy that has been chasing a buck for 3 years now and he was a main frame 12 in all his pictures this year. He was glassing a field last night and saw him... He busted a whole side off already... Now he is a 7 pointer haha
And mast crop is same way here, its everywhere... And I too have noticed more scrapes and I haven't seen a rub yet but plenty of scrape action.
I have yet to see a rub or scrape on this property also. Last year I passed on 5 other bucks because they were missing whole sides or most of there points. The 5 we did harvest on this property were harder to notice tines broke cause they were just last inch or so of a point.

Here a prime example. I have 5 bucks on trail cam on this property this year and Ive seen 4 of them in person in the last week and all were missing tines or whole sides. Here is the before and after pic of the 10pt I been lookn for. His G-3 is broken. Most the bucks I harvest on this property are missing more than one.
