I notice in BSK trail cam pics I dont see alot of busted up antlers. I harvested 3 bucks on a property last year all 2.5 or older and my nephew harvested 2 bucks as well and all had broken tines. All had at least one tine damaged but most had multiple tines damaged. Is this an indication of anything? Buck/doe ratio? Any thoughts?

I'm no scientist but it sounds to me like some sort of a deficiency. Possibly a vitamin or mineral you may be lacking on your propery???

Although I suspect that the buck/doe ratio is linked to this by some means, I would lean more towards the food production (mainly acorns). I heard of quite a few hunters stating that almost every buck was "busted up" last year....I think the main cause of this was due to the abundance of acorns. Just like other posts mentions, in good acorn years, you are more than likely going to see more rubs and "rutting activity" in general. I think this is linked to the amount of energy they are consuming from the abundance of all the acorns that givin year. Years such as this year, (atleast in my area), there arent NEARLY as many acorns as the last 2 years. As a result, we really arent seeing that many rubs.
This all IMO relates to them being "busted up" and the abundance of sign in good acorn years. Saying that they arent busted up this year because a lack of energy, would be a pretty good guess as far as I'm concerned from the "lack of acorns".

Interesting theory JC. I will agree that during good acorn years we have a more intense and tightly timed rut. I also think that the busted racks result from the local competition between bucks, which can vary greatly from one area to another.

JC's post is the first time this year that I have heard of poor mast crop from anyone. It's still like walking on marbles in my area!

The rub thing makes sense. I have seen more scrapes than rubs this year. Last year every other tree was rubbed up.

By the end of the rut, I'll be photographing a bunch of busted up racks. There just isn't much fighting in my area this year (yet) because most of the bucks using my property spent the summer together. They established their dominance status during the summer. Not until "new" bucks start moving in for the rut (just starting now) will there be any fighting.

I have noticed a dramatic increase in busted pionts since people have quit shooting every buck they see. More competition equals more fights.

I have a buddy that has been chasing a buck for 3 years now and he was a main frame 12 in all his pictures this year. He was glassing a field last night and saw him... He busted a whole side off already... Now he is a 7 pointer haha
And mast crop is same way here, its everywhere... And I too have noticed more scrapes and I haven't seen a rub yet but plenty of scrape action.
