Walking in this evening at 2:30 got blown at by a doe. Got posted by 3:15 at Hickory Turn. Red oaks dropping. 4:00 saw my first deer That the beginning of a long line of activity. Does were in and out all afternoon. At 5:30 a 4 point fawn buck came in. After a while he angled off out of view…then I heard antlers being tickled. I peered through the dense brush to barely see two bucks lightly sparring. Then to my amazement the bigger buck pushed out the 4 pointer and low and behold it was a shooter 8 pointer. He was a tall beamed buck with G-2’s a good 12” and an estimated 19” spread with thick mass 3.5 year old. I could not believe he was giving the 4 point the time of day. I watched him for a while and when I saw him traveling towards a spot where I could get a shot I attempted to laze the distance and my range finder would not work. Needless to say I gave it my best estimate and drew back at the first opportunity. I held at full draw for at least 60 seconds before he stepped into the clear. I picked the spot and let it fly. The arrow went just a hair below the belly. He jumped about 3 feet and looked around while seeming un bothered by the event. I knocked another arrow. For another 20 minutes he taunted me until I finally had another shot. Again shot below him. I knocked a 3rd arrow and waited. Deer continued to pour in while he slowly walked away. Just a few minutes before dark he came back, but never offered a clear shot. I’ll try it again tomorrow night. Just goes to show you…when you get complacent utilizing high tech equipment and let your yardage skills slide, which I admit I have done, you can easily blow a great opportunity. But hey it was a fantastic hunt! Saw 13 deer total and had a riveting opportunity!!

Proof a great hunt isn't always based around a harvest. Great story. Good luck with em next time

Great story!

I like to range some landmarks such as trees or stumps when arriving so I'll already know distances when the time comes.
