A buddy and I are talking about skipping bow season here in TN next year and saving our money for a week in the mid west near the end of october. Does any one have any recommendations? We are not looking for a guided hunt where they take you to the stand. What we would like is someone to show us the area and maybe give some recommendations but then just let us hunt on our own for a week. We would like somewhere with a legitimate chance at seeing mature bucks.

Sounds like a good idea...I know Kansas has ALOT of really good public hunting areas with good deer. Your not overrun with hunters out there. Go to outdoorchannel.com and check out a show called "On Your Own Adventures". I also know of Western Kentucky Outfitters that have DIY (do it yourself) hunts.

southern ohio. in the big public land parcels. old logging roads get tore up with scrapes 1st of nov. plus lots of terrain features like saddles pinch points etc.

It will be hard to find GOOD private ground unless you are hunting with an outfitter!! Most people wont give strangers total access to their property.I think public land is what you will have to hunt in this case.

An outfitter is fine. We just have no desire for him to say hunt in this tree. We just want access to the property.
