Did you open the chest cavity and have a look? Would be interesting to know what was hit by the wounding shot, whether it was above the spine and/or pierced the chest cavity at all. If he was wheezing, sounds like it must have got inside the cavity at leat a bit. Did you see him eat anything?

Did not see him eat. There was a small incision in the chest cavity. Not like the whole broadhead but maybe just the tip of a blade or something.

I KNOW this is a VERY controversial conversation, and also one that has been talked about over and over on this forum. But it is entirely possible to penetrate the chest cavity with an arrow and the deer survive. Looks like here is another example!

X2. It happens...elevated stands cause the vital area to be narrower than if one is shooting from the ground. I think it happens more with big mature deer than any other deer. My guess would be because there is more "area" thus more chances of shooting in the cavity but missing or barely clipping the vital organs.
