Well, today I am going to do something that I have never done before. In preparation for the refuge hunt this weekend, I am going to make a mock scrape.
I plan on going to where I plan to hunt after work today and set up my blind and make the scrape, then leave it alone until Saturday morning. I may have waited too late to make the scrape, but , better late than never, I guess.
I have a few questions, though.
First, do deer always approach a scrape from downwind and if they do, how do I make sure (wind direction) that I will be on the right side of the scrape?
I "expect" pressure surely from the North and possibly the East......however, with the trails being so many, deer movement can be from any direction.
The area that I plan to watch is laid out like this....There is a creek and three major crossings to my w/nw. An acorn flat (being used) is to my e/ne. Except for the three crossings, there are really no distinct trails....trails are everywhere..I plan on sitting in a homemade (treetops and limbs with burlap camo)blind on the ground. I plan on being about midway between the creek and the acorn flat, to the south(the direction I am coming in from).
With any luck at all, I will get a N wind for the weekend, but I expect no favors from Mother Nature. A S wind would be brutal but not truly devastating. As I said before, deer may indeed come from any direction.
Which direction from my setup would be best for the scrape? I guess it needs to be within sight of the blind...?
I was thinking the best place would be in front of the blind between the creek crossing and the acorn flat, directly to my north, the way that I will be facing. To my east or west are options as well....
any thoughts?
