I know I've seen this on here a bunch but I have some new thoughts.

Traditionally I am typically in stand 10 min or so before legal shooting light sometimes I try and slip in at gray light with no light and get up the tree (if I have a hang on already set).

Im adjusting to trying to be there and totally set 30 min before legal shooting light. Set in the pitch dark. I think deer let more slide earlier in the AM and dont run off.

We got in early this weekend on my land and had pics in all 3 plots right at daylight. The deer were still on normal patterns...it didnt throw them off at all. I am becoming a firm believer in get in early and let it settle down.

What say you? When do you get in?

it depends on where i am hunting......

sometimes it's after first light and sometimes it's an hour before......if i have to walk across a field , i prefer to do so after first light so i can check the field for deer before doing so. If I am going back in to a bedding area and believe that deer will be coming in there right after daylight, then I go in an hour early.

I don't REALLY have a standard time. I usually make up my mind after a few hunts when I can get an idea about when the deer come through ....

I rarely see deer at first light anyway...most of my deer sightings come mid-morning , midday, and late afternoon.

i never panic if i oversleep and get in my stand late.....i never saw a deer wearing a watch....lol.

I try to be in 20 to 30 min. before legal light. Any earlier and fatigue and boredom begin to set in before I even get to start hunting and that isn't good.

I have had success walking in an hour or so after legal light as well and hunting until mid day. Usually, where I hunt, there is some movement very early, then a lull for a couple hours, then movement again at the 9:30 to 11:00 range. Often times, that second round of movement is when I see bucks on their feet.

Deer seem to be less spooked when it is dark. I try to be there as early as possible for the given situation. On a small private tract I hunt which is basically a bedding area, I always arrive 1.5 hour before 1st light as its the only way not to spook deer.

On other properties, I try to be there minimum 45 minutes before first light, earlier if possible.

I have 1 tree stand this Fall that is set up right in the middle of a small, core bedding area with Cedar trees and a small, but well protected pond. It will be a 1 shot deal as I believe there is a mature buck in there. When I take this 1 opportunity for this particular tree stand, I will probably arrive 2-3 hours before 1st light as it will be the only way to be sure I beat him to his bedding area and then I will wait for him to do some midd day milling around or take a drink of water.

I don't start walking in until it starts breaking daylight. I don't like sitting in the stand and hearing deer walking around my stand without me being able to see them. I would much rather them go on through before I get there without any possibility of them winding me or me messing em up somehow. I normally get to my stand about 5 min after you can see to shoot. I have never had any problem of deer being by my stand when I get there. And I have killed a big buck for the past 6 yrs like this so I don't have any reason to change. And plus I don't care too much about walking around in the dark.

I like to be set up and ready 15 to 20 minutes before it starts getting light. I think getting in earlier would be even better but sometimes I just can not get myself going. I have a buddy that swears its a waste of time because he never sees deer early in the morning. My response was maybe because your going up the tree in the daylight and you busted all the deer off walking in.

Agreed. The more I learn about hunting, the earlier I believe you should arrive at your stand.

I've heard hunters complain that they dislike walking through the dark woods. I'll be the first to admit that it can sometimes be spooky, but I love it.

O I agree it can be spooky some times. I used to have this spot where I had to walk right beside a late 1800 early 1900 graveyard that was spoooky

It depends on where I'm hunting. If I'm hunting a bedding area I'd like to be there an hour before light. If I'm hunting feeding or transition areas, I go in right at daylight. I have walked up on two bucks this year that were in food plots on my way to the stand. In both cases I was able to wait until the deer moved on naturally without spooking them. I hunt my way to the stand and have killed several before I ever reach it.

Hunting in the mountains of east TN, it can sometimes be detrimental to get in so early. The thermals sink down the mountains and into the valleys. I've hand several deer wind me below my stand as I'm waiting for the sun to come up.

when i can get there in reality, in theory i try to be there 10-15mins before legal shooting time for the most part. During firearm season I sometimes delay my walk until i can make out shapes giving me the option to hunt AS i walk to the stand.

I usually fire tack my way to my tree b4 season starts, and use a red or green light. I try to get there at least 30 min to an hour b4 it gets light.
